Kimi Antonelli openly discusses F1 2026 title hopes and Mercedes breakthrough

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes, 2024 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has spoken more openly than ever about his hopes of winning the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, admitting during a conversation with NBA star Victor Wembanyama that he could secure the title within the next two weeks. The Mercedes driver has spent much of the season carefully managing expectations, but his latest comments suggest he now believes the championship is firmly within reach.

Having built a commanding advantage through a series of impressive victories, Andrea Kimi Antonelli is approaching what could become a historic achievement for Italian motorsport. If he secures the Drivers’ Championship, he will become the first Italian Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. His confidence has grown considerably since his maiden victory in China, with subsequent triumphs at Suzuka, Miami and Monaco helping transform him from a promising young driver into the championship favourite.

Kimi Antonelli openly discusses his 2026 F1 title ambitions

Throughout the season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has chosen his words carefully whenever the possibility of becoming world champion has been raised. Despite his commanding position in the standings, the Mercedes driver has generally avoided making bold predictions or treating the title as a certainty before it is mathematically secured.

However, when French basketball star Victor Wembanyama asked about his Formula 1 season, the Italian offered a more revealing assessment of his chances.

“The season is going well,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli told Victor Wembanyama. “I’m fighting for the title and it’s getting closer. So hopefully we can clinch it in two weeks. But we’ll see.”

The choice of the English expression “clinch it” is particularly significant. In sporting terminology, it means mathematically securing a championship or achieving a decisive result that puts the outcome beyond doubt. Andrea Kimi Antonelli was therefore referring to the possibility of officially wrapping up the title rather than simply winning another race or extending his championship advantage.

His comments represent a notable shift from the caution he has displayed throughout much of the campaign. Although he stopped short of declaring himself champion, he identified a specific timeframe in which he believes the title could be decided.

That possibility has become increasingly realistic as the 2026 Formula 1 season approaches its conclusion. Should the United States Grand Prix in Austin fail to produce the decisive result, the following race in Mexico City could provide another opportunity for Andrea Kimi Antonelli to make history.

Such an achievement would end Italy’s long wait for another Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion, stretching back to Alberto Ascari’s second title in 1953.

How victories in China and Suzuka transformed Kimi Antonelli’s season

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s growing confidence has not come from a single performance. Instead, it reflects a sequence of victories that gradually transformed both his approach to racing and his belief in his ability to compete for the world championship.

According to the Mercedes driver, his maiden Formula 1 victory in China was particularly important from a psychological perspective. Although he had already demonstrated the speed required to compete at the front, converting that potential into a Grand Prix victory provided a different level of reassurance.

“My first victory in China took a huge weight off my shoulders,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained. “First of all, it was an enormous satisfaction, but also a relief. I had already shown that I was capable of winning, but breaking the ice marked the turning point.

“Winning immediately afterwards at Suzuka was extremely important, a springboard that gave me the confidence and momentum to do it again in Miami and Monte Carlo.”

The significance of those early victories extended beyond the championship points they delivered. For a young driver, knowing that the necessary speed is available is not the same as producing a winning performance under the pressure of a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Every qualifying session, strategic decision and race situation can make the difference between victory and disappointment. The triumph in China removed the uncertainty surrounding Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s ability to convert his potential into results, while his subsequent success at Suzuka reinforced that belief.

Those achievements helped establish the foundation for his victories in Miami and Monaco. Confidence became an increasingly important element of his performances, complementing the technical work undertaken by Mercedes and his developing ability to manage demanding race situations.

For Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the transition from being regarded as a promising talent to becoming a genuine championship contender has involved more than outright speed. It has also required the ability to approach each weekend with the conviction that victories can be achieved consistently rather than occasionally.

Kimi Antonelli explains why Monaco proved Mercedes is more than an engine

Among Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victories in 2026, his triumph at the Monaco Grand Prix holds particular significance. The demanding streets of Monte Carlo provide a very different technical challenge from many other Formula 1 circuits, placing greater emphasis on chassis performance, aerodynamics, driving precision and the ability to operate close to the limit.

Engine power is comparatively less influential in Monaco than at circuits featuring long straights, making the event an important indicator of a car’s performance through corners and its overall balance.

For Andrea Kimi Antonelli, winning in the Principality therefore demonstrated that Mercedes’ competitiveness extends beyond the strength of its power unit.

“It was nice to be the positive surprise in the Principality,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli added. “Power matters very little there; it’s all about the chassis and driving. Our car isn’t just about the engine: in terms of chassis and aerodynamics, it performs extremely well.

“Winning in Monaco was a fundamental result for both me and the team. I played my part. I was convinced that I could be competitive, and not starting as the favourite actually helped us.”

The Italian’s assessment highlights the combination of factors behind Mercedes’ success. While the team’s car has provided a highly competitive technical foundation, Andrea Kimi Antonelli also believes his own driving contributed significantly to the Monaco result.

The circuit leaves drivers with very little margin for error. Its narrow streets and demanding corners reward precision, confidence and the ability to maintain concentration throughout the weekend.

By winning in those conditions, Andrea Kimi Antonelli demonstrated his ability to exploit the strengths of the Mercedes while adapting his driving to the particular demands of the circuit.

Monaco victory highlights the strength of Mercedes chassis and aerodynamics

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s comments also offer an insight into the technical characteristics of the Mercedes Formula 1 car. Its competitiveness, in his assessment, cannot be attributed exclusively to engine performance.

The chassis and aerodynamic package have also proved effective, particularly at venues where mechanical balance, cornering performance and driver confidence become decisive factors.

Monaco provided a particularly meaningful test of those qualities. The relative lack of emphasis on outright engine power meant that Mercedes needed a car capable of performing consistently through the circuit’s demanding sequence of corners.

The victory therefore strengthened Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s belief that the team possesses a well-rounded package, rather than one that depends primarily on the performance of its power unit.

At the same time, the Italian made it clear that the car’s competitiveness should not overshadow his own contribution. He approached the Monaco weekend believing he could challenge for victory, even though he was not considered the leading favourite before the event.

Why the absence of expectations helped Kimi Antonelli win in Monaco

Another important aspect of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Monaco victory was the relative absence of pressure. Arriving at a race without being regarded as the favourite can allow a driver to approach the weekend with greater freedom, particularly during the early stages of a Formula 1 career.

For Andrea Kimi Antonelli, that situation proved beneficial. He believed Mercedes could be competitive and was able to take advantage of the opportunity without carrying the same expectations normally placed on the championship’s leading contenders.

The result further strengthened his confidence and contributed to the remarkable sequence of victories that has brought him to the brink of the 2026 title.

However, the situation has now changed. His performances have reshaped expectations, and the possibility of becoming world champion has become a central part of the discussion surrounding his season.

With that recognition comes additional responsibility. Andrea Kimi Antonelli is no longer simply a young driver attempting to establish himself at the front of the Formula 1 grid; he is now the leading candidate to secure the sport’s most prestigious individual honour.

Nevertheless, he continues to balance his growing confidence with caution. His concluding words to Victor Wembanyama, “But we’ll see”, demonstrate that he is not taking anything for granted.

The important difference is that Andrea Kimi Antonelli now appears comfortable discussing the championship directly. What was previously a possibility he preferred not to emphasise has become an objective he is prepared to acknowledge openly.

After victories in China, Suzuka, Miami and Monaco helped establish his confidence and championship credentials, the Mercedes driver is now approaching the final stage of his pursuit of the 2026 Formula 1 world title.
