Mercedes has decided to place its trust in Kimi Antonelli, and Toto Wolff is confident that he will prove his great abilities. He has been certain of this for a long time because, as soon as Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari, the team principal already had a clear vision for that seat’s future.
Toto Wolff explained why Kimi Antonelli’s debut has come at the right time. The Austrian also clarified why, unlike George Russell, the Italian driver did not have to go through a stint at Williams before being promoted to Mercedes.
Antonelli debuts at the right time: the three reasons
Ferrari chose to sign Lewis Hamilton, betting on his vast F1 experience and numerous successes. Mercedes, on the other hand, opted for a young driver still in development but who has shown great skill in junior categories in recent years. On this, Wolff explained: “There are two schools of thought in these cases. You take a risk by betting on a young driver you believe is capable of rising to the challenge, or you take a more conservative approach, go to the market, and sign the best available driver.”
Thinking about Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes team principal also considered the coming years. His decision regarding the young Italian’s future was influenced by the regulation changes set for 2026. “I have always been convinced that 2025 was the right moment for him to make the leap. Next season, the technical regulations will change, and we want him to reach that point with a year of experience under his belt.”
Finally, Toto Wolff clarified why Kimi Antonelli went straight to Mercedes without a stint at the satellite team where Russell previously raced. “Placing Kimi in another team to gain experience, like Williams, would have meant loaning him out for at least two seasons. I didn’t want to commit for that long. Moreover, even if we had found a team willing to take Kimi for just one season, what motivation would a driver have to go to Mercedes for only a year?”
