Two hundred and twenty-six laps. That’s how Andrea Kimi Antonelli introduced himself to the F1 world, with a testing performance in Bahrain that was far from guaranteed. The Italian driver hit the track surrounded by an air of mystery that was anything but easy to dispel, with critics ready to target both him and Toto Wolff for what had often been seen as a rushed decision.
Having a rookie in Mercedes, replacing a seven-time world champion like Lewis Hamilton, was and still is a double-edged sword for the Silver Arrows’ Team Principal. On one hand, a successful season would be a major victory for Toto Wolff, but on the other, there is the risk that the young Italian talent may not deliver the necessary results.
For a team that has been the most dominant of the last decade, another championship far from the top would be difficult to accept. Yes, it’s true that Mercedes (and not only them) is heavily focused on 2026, which could shake up the competitive order, but at the same time, the German team’s leadership could start considering changes within the organization.
How did Kimi’s Bahrain test go?
If well begun is half done, then Mercedes has every reason to be confident. The three days of testing in Bahrain showed that Kimi Antonelli was anything but out of place and more than ready for his F1 debut.
The Italian driver completed over 200 laps, coming close to George Russell’s numbers and demonstrating impressive consistency, particularly in race pace. Like other teams with rookies, Mercedes structured Antonelli’s testing program around tire management and race simulations.
For drivers coming from lower categories, maintaining race pace over a Grand Prix distance is one of the toughest aspects to master. From this perspective, Antonelli’s performance only reinforces the high expectations surrounding him.
The young Italian has something special compared to others and is ready to make an impact in his debut season. It’s no coincidence that Kimi Antonelli himself has set a clear goal for Australia: a top-six finish, which would mean beating two drivers from the current top teams. A result that is far from easy or guaranteed but certainly within reach for the rising star that is Kimi Antonelli.
