The Spanish Grand Prix was certainly not a lucky weekend for Kimi Antonelli. After starting from third on the grid—not due to any particular mistakes of his own—he put together a brilliant recovery race, eventually pulling off a forceful overtake on his teammate George Russell, who had started from pole position. Unfortunately, shortly after that stellar pass, his car suffered a technical failure, forcing him to park at the side of the track. It was a devastating DNF to absorb, especially considering that his closest world championship rival, Lewis Hamilton, went on to win the Grand Prix.
The post-race FIA track limits investigation
Following the conclusion of the event, the FIA placed the young Italian under investigation for “leaving the track multiple times without a justifiable reason”. According to the official document issued by the stewards, Antonelli was reported for exceeding track limits on four separate occasions. As a result, a five-second time penalty was added to his final race time. It is a decision that ultimately inflicts very little damage, given that the Mercedes rookie had already retired and was well outside the points-paying positions.
An unusual communication breakdown from the stewards
A curious detail emerged from the investigation regarding how the penalties were handled. Antonelli never received the standard black-and-white warning flag after his third track limits strike. Instead, the warning notification only arrived after his fourth violation because the electronic system had registered one of his earlier infractions late.
Despite this delay, the stewards chose to enforce the final sanction, ruling that both the Mercedes pit wall and the driver himself should have exercised greater caution on track. However, the stewards noted that they will officially report the incident to senior officials to ensure this type of timing system error does not happen again in future rounds.
Ultimately, this eye-opening weekend in Spain highlights how rapidly fortunes can shift in modern Formula 1, leaving teams to analyze the data from this intense race weekend as the pressure continues to mount heading into the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix.
