Kimi Antonelli will begin the 2026 Italian Grand Prix facing a major recovery drive from the back of the grid, but the Mercedes driver will have no shortage of support at Monza. Alongside the thousands of Italian fans in the grandstands, championship leader Antonelli has been joined by close friend Marco Bezzecchi and several senior members of Aprilia’s MotoGP operation ahead of a potentially crucial race in his title campaign.
It had already been clear before the weekend that Monza would not be straightforward for the 20-year-old from Bologna. Together with Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli decided to serve his power unit grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix, meaning he will have to fight his way forward from the rear of the field.
Marco Bezzecchi and Aprilia rally behind Kimi Antonelli at Monza
Despite the difficult starting position, Antonelli can count on plenty of home support. Half of the Aprilia MotoGP team has appeared at Monza, led by Marco Bezzecchi, a close personal friend of the Mercedes driver.
Bezzecchi will have his own home event only seven days later at Misano, but first the rider from Rimini has travelled to Monza to support Antonelli as he attempts to recover through the field.
Also present are Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola, who knows Formula 1 particularly well after spending many years working for Ferrari, and Antonio Boselli, Piaggio Group’s Head of Motorsport Communications.
The group also spent Saturday evening together over dinner in a paddock motorhome. The occasion was captured in a selfie shared on social media by Kimi Antonelli’s father, Marco, providing the Mercedes driver with some extra encouragement before one of the most important Sundays of his season.
Kimi Antonelli faces crucial Italian GP recovery drive
The first objective for Kimi Antonelli will be to minimise the championship damage caused by his grid penalty. The Italian remains at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, making every position and every point particularly valuable as the title fight enters its decisive phase.
Starting from the back makes a straightforward victory challenge extremely difficult, but Monza offers opportunities to overtake thanks to its long straights and heavy braking zones. Antonelli will therefore be looking to clear slower traffic as quickly as possible while avoiding trouble in the opening laps.
The Italian has already received widespread support throughout his rise with Mercedes, but the presence of Bezzecchi and Aprilia adds a distinctly Italian flavour to his home Grand Prix weekend.
Italian motorsport unites around Antonelli
For Antonelli, the visit represents more than a simple appearance by fellow motorsport personalities. His friendship with Marco Bezzecchi provides a personal connection between two of Italy’s most prominent young stars competing at the highest levels of four-wheel and two-wheel racing.
The timing is also significant. Bezzecchi will soon turn his attention to his own home Grand Prix at Misano, while Antonelli first has the difficult task of fighting through the Monza field and protecting his advantage in the Formula 1 championship.
Damage limitation may be the immediate target for the Mercedes driver, but with the support of the Italian crowd and some familiar faces from Aprilia behind him, Antonelli will head into the race hoping to turn a difficult starting position into another important result. And from the back of the grid at Monza, nothing can be taken for granted.
