In recent days, after being sidelined by Red Bull at the end of 2024, it appears that Mexican driver Sergio Perez is once again attracting interest from Formula 1 teams. The Cadillac scenario is gaining more traction. Rumors continue to circulate, and the possibility that the two parties will meet and establish a long-term partnership is no longer far-fetched.
The Andretti team needs experienced drivers, and Checo is one of those who has accumulated plenty of it, having raced for teams like McLaren, Force India, and most recently for the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
Juan Pablo Montoya urges Perez: “He should move to Alpine”
However, there are those, like Pablo Montoya, who do not believe Cadillac would be the best place to spend the final years of Sergio Perez’s career. The former Colombian driver points to another team where Sergio Perez could potentially find greater success: “I believe that right now Perez is doing everything he can to secure a spot at Cadillac for 2026. But in my opinion, it would make much more sense if he managed to join Alpine.”
“Considering he has one or two years left before retiring from F1, a team like Alpine would make a lot more sense,” Juan Pablo Montoya told ‘Sites de Aposta’, before pointing out one key detail that might prevent Checo from realistically aiming for the French outfit. “First of all, we have to see what Franco Colapinto can achieve. It’s very hard to say right now.”
Juan Pablo Montoya suggests Perez and Zhou as potential teammates at Cadillac
At the moment, the Andretti outfit seems the most accessible, and the Colombian says he would be “surprised if Cadillac weren’t interested in Sergio Perez as their lead driver. The other driver could be Zhou. Guanyu has already driven Ferrari engines, and both bring significant sponsorship money. Funds the team could invest in the car,” reports ‘Crash.net’.
No future left for Sergio Perez at Red Bull
Finally, assessing all the variables, Juan Pablo Montoya also commented on the likelihood of a return to Red Bull. Given the performances delivered by Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda this year, he sees that possibility as highly unlikely: “The only person capable of replacing Yuki is Isack Hadjar (currently at Racing Bulls). He’s doing well in VCARB,” he concluded.
