Kimi Under the Spotlight
Formula 1 fans have plenty to talk about—not only the much-discussed arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari but also the return of an Italian driver to the grid after a three-year absence. However, according to former McLaren and Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s debut will be anything but easy. Not only is he stepping in to replace a seven-time world champion, but he will also be driving a top-tier car against a teammate like George Russell, who is at the peak of his career. The media pressure will be immense.
Juan Pablo Montoya on Antonelli’s Debut
“I think for Kimi,” Montoya said in an interview with CasinoApps, “it will be difficult to handle the hype surrounding him. He is a very fast driver with great potential, but when you go fast, accidents can happen. There have also been reports of him crashing while testing older cars. I believe Antonelli is fully focused on his F1 debut, and if he can control his emotions and understand that it takes time to reach his full potential, his debut will go well. However, if he tries to go all out and beat everyone right away, it could backfire on him.”
Juan Pablo Montoya advised Mercedes to keep Antonelli’s exuberance in check, referencing the crash that marked his first official F1 session in FP1 at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza: “Someone needs to hold him back and tell him to slow down. Kimi has plenty of time to avoid getting himself into trouble. But I think there’s a good chance he could find himself in an embarrassing situation because he has clearly shown that he is a fast driver, but he has also shown that he can make mistakes. When you push hard, you crash, but if you don’t crash, it means you’re not pushing enough. He will need to find the right balance.” In recent days, Montoya also praised Toto Wolff’s decision to bring in an experienced driver like Valtteri Bottas as a safety net in case Antonelli struggles more than expected.
Mercedes, Watch Out for the Russell Challenge
Another challenge for the 18-year-old Italian—who, in the meantime, has “celebrated” by passing his driving license test—will be competing against George Russell: “When you have a teammate like George, who is in his prime and has been with the team for years, it’s not easy. This is the situation where Kimi must try to get the best out of himself. He will have weeks where he is very strong and others where things won’t go well. He must learn from the tough experiences and understand why they went wrong. If he takes the time to grasp these nuances, I’m sure he will be able to react in the right way.”
