Juan Pablo Montoya explains why Kimi Antonelli makes George Russell’s Mercedes fight harder

Juan Pablo Montoya believes George Russell faces an unusual additional difficulty in his fight with Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli: the Italian is simply too likeable to make it easy for Russell to turn their championship rivalry into a personal battle. With seven Grand Prix victories from the opening 13 races of 2026, Antonelli has rapidly established himself as the dominant force of the season.

The seventh of those victories came in front of his home crowd at Monza, where Kimi Antonelli produced a remarkable recovery from the back of the grid to win the Italian Grand Prix. His results have left George Russell facing a team-mate who has adapted particularly effectively to the current generation of Formula 1 machinery.

Kimi Antonelli takes control of the 2026 Formula 1 season

Seven wins from 13 Grands Prix tell much of the story. Antonelli’s latest triumph was perhaps his most dramatic, coming at Monza after he had started towards the rear of the field and fought his way all the way to victory.

In The Lord of the Rings, King Théoden asks, “What can men do against such reckless hate?” before leading a final mounted charge, inspired by Aragorn, against Saruman’s forces at Helm’s Deep.

A similar, if deliberately exaggerated, question can now be posed about George Russell: what can he do against Andrea Kimi Antonelli?

The British driver appeared to have a major opportunity to challenge for the World Championship with Mercedes possessing one of the strongest cars on the grid. Instead, Antonelli, born in 2006 and now in only his second Formula 1 season, has proved considerably more effective so far in adapting to this generation of cars.

The extent of that advantage was particularly visible in Italy, where even one of George Russell’s strongest Monza performances was not enough to stop Antonelli from completing his extraordinary comeback.

Montoya explains why fighting Antonelli is difficult for George Russell

Juan Pablo Montoya has now highlighted another factor which, in his view, works in Antonelli’s favour and makes it even harder for George Russell to rebel against his team-mate’s superiority.

“It’s really difficult to get angry with Antonelli and go against him because he’s such a likeable guy,” Juan Pablo Montoya told BetBrothers. “If he were an a**hole, it would be much easier for George Russell to attack him. But he’s simply a cheerful, carefree guy. And that makes everything more difficult.”

Montoya’s observation adds a different dimension to a Mercedes rivalry that has increasingly become one of the central stories of the 2026 season. Antonelli is not only producing the stronger results, but doing so while maintaining an easy-going public personality that, in Montoya’s view, makes it harder for his team-mate to turn their contest into a confrontational one.

Antonelli’s results add pressure inside Mercedes

The Italian’s performances have steadily strengthened his position within Mercedes and in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. Monza was the clearest example yet, with Antonelli recovering through the field and defeating Russell despite his team-mate starting from the front row.

Montoya has already expressed surprise at just how quickly Antonelli has developed, previously praising the Mercedes driver’s increasingly controlled aggression and racecraft. The Colombian now believes Antonelli’s personality creates another, less obvious advantage in the psychological dynamic between the Mercedes team-mates.

For George Russell, the challenge is therefore not simply to find a way of beating one of Formula 1’s most successful drivers of the season on the track. According to Montoya, even finding an opponent to direct his frustration towards is unusually difficult when that opponent is Kimi Antonelli.
