Jos Verstappen rules out ever being a co-driver, even alongside his son Max, despite praising the role in rallying.
Jos Verstappen on co-driving
Throughout his career, Jos Verstappen has been best known for his time in Formula 1, competing from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. He claimed two consecutive podiums in 1994 while driving for Benetton, finishing third at both the Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix. Interestingly, this year in Belgium, Jos returned to rallying and won the national title once again as a driver.
However, the 53-year-old Dutchman is firm in his decision never to embark on a new adventure as a co-driver in rallies. While acknowledging the importance and skill required for co-drivers, Verstappen repeatedly emphasized in an interview with Formula 1 Magazine that he would not want to provide directions to the driver sitting next to him during a stage. “Every day I get up and say a Hail Mary — he explained — as a driver, you know the risks, but honestly, as a co-driver, you have to be even braver.”
A firm personal boundary
This resolute stance means that Jos will not take the co-driver seat under any circumstances, even if the person behind the wheel was the one he cares about most: his son Max. “Personally, I would never sit next to anyone else, not even next to Max,” he added, making it clear that rally co-driving is simply not a role he is willing to assume.
