Jos Verstappen on racing at Le Mans with Max: “He wants it, but I’m too slow”. Jos Verstappen on racing at Le Mans with Max.

Max’s plans and Jos’s doubts
Jos Verstappen raised his son Max by “programming” him for a high-level career in motorsport, and as a mentor, Jos has undoubtedly been more effective than he was behind the wheel. However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Jos’s own achievements include two podiums in F1 (both in 1994 with Benetton, third places in Hungary and Belgium).

In what would be a perfect full-circle moment, Max Verstappen would one day like to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a team that includes his father Jos. The latter, however, doubts he’s up to his son’s ambition: “He talks about it often, it’s true, but I’m too slow for him. I don’t think this project will ever come to fruition,” Jos said in an interview with F1-insider.com.

Staying on the topic of the future, but in the shorter term, Jos Verstappen continues to consider a team change for Max a possibility in light of Red Bull’s declining performance. “Max’s goal is to win races,” he added. “If he feels that’s no longer possible at Red Bull, a move can’t be ruled out. Looking at the second half of 2024, one cannot be optimistic. Red Bull hasn’t been able to consistently make the car fast, and they definitely have a lot of work to do this winter to produce a car that’s more predictable and better suited to different types of circuits.”
