Jos Verstappen has issued a blunt response to fresh speculation about supposed negotiations between Red Bull and Max Verstappen over the four-time Formula 1 world champion’s future. The Dutchman’s father intervened on social media after claims emerged about what Red Bull might offer Max Verstappen in exchange for changes to his contract.
“You know absolutely nothing,” Jos Verstappen wrote on X, rejecting the latest theory surrounding his son’s position at Red Bull. As he has done on several occasions, the former Formula 1 driver moved quickly to defend Max Verstappen’s interests and challenge reports about discussions taking place behind the scenes.
Jos Verstappen responds to Red Bull contract claims
Jos Verstappen’s comment was directed at an article published by the Dutch edition of GPblog. The report suggested that Red Bull would be prepared to satisfy any request made by Max Verstappen, provided the driver agreed to remove the exit clauses included in his current contract.
Max Verstappen’s Red Bull contract is officially valid until the end of the 2028 Formula 1 season. However, certain performance-related conditions could allow the four-time world champion to leave the team before that date.
The precise wording and activation criteria connected to those clauses have generated considerable speculation. Max Verstappen has repeatedly been linked with a possible move away from Red Bull, with Mercedes most frequently mentioned as a potential destination.
Discussion surrounding that possibility intensified again during the Formula 1 summer break after Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff were photographed together. However, those images did not provide evidence that formal negotiations were taking place.
Conflicting theories over Max Verstappen’s exit clauses
A wide range of theories has emerged regarding the exit clauses in Max Verstappen’s Red Bull agreement. One interpretation concerning the 2026 season gained attention shortly after the incident at Silverstone, which led to an immediate discussion between Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies and Max Verstappen’s closest representatives, father Jos Verstappen and manager Raymond Vermeulen.
At that point, it was suggested that Max Verstappen was already technically free to reach an agreement with another Formula 1 team. The theory was based on the claim that it had become mathematically impossible for him to occupy second place in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship when the summer break began following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The BBC subsequently rejected that interpretation, reporting that Max Verstappen would not be able to leave his Red Bull contract before October at the earliest. The uncertainty has continued to fuel discussion about the driver’s long-term plans and the exact circumstances under which his agreement could be terminated.
Max Verstappen has nevertheless avoided becoming drawn into the constant speculation surrounding his future. Speaking during the press conference ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Dutch driver offered a clear response when asked when further information might become available.
“When there is news, you will hear it directly from me,” Max Verstappen said.
Until Max Verstappen, Red Bull or his representatives provide a formal update, reports about negotiations and contractual concessions remain unconfirmed. A broader examination of Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future has also highlighted the continuing interest from rival teams, but Jos Verstappen’s latest intervention indicates that the family rejects the current claims about talks with Red Bull.
