Will There Really Be a Turning Point in Barcelona?
The 2025 F1 season started with one certainty: after 8 races — one third of the season — starting from the Barcelona weekend, a technical directive regarding flexible wings would come into effect, and it is far from minor. The new parameters set by the Federation forced all teams to equip themselves with new aerodynamic appendages to comply with the FIA’s new requirements.
The Barcelona weekend has finally arrived, and the clock will give the verdict on possible performance drops from one or more teams that had benefited by finding ways to make the wings, especially the front ones, flex.
Jos Verstappen, interviewed by the Dutch publication De Telegraaf, pointed out that from his perspective, too much time was allowed regarding the tolerated legality of these flexible wings: “Some teams benefited from it for too long. I don’t think it’s fair,” Jos Verstappen said about the flexible wings that will now be banned starting this weekend. Currently, Max Verstappen is 25 points behind Oscar Piastri, a gap that Red Bull would have ‘signed up for’ at the beginning of the season for this first cycle of eight races. “For the fans and for Formula 1, this is an ideal scenario,” Jos added, “they want to have an exciting season and not someone winning 20 races so it becomes monotonous. But I believe there must be a level playing field,” Jos concluded, referring to the fact that with flexible wings, a level playing field was not present in these first eight races.
