Jonathan Wheatley, former Red Bull figure, is now team principal at Audi, marking a remarkable career path in Formula 1.
An offer impossible to refuse
From working as a mechanic at Benetton to taking the helm of Audi’s F1 project, directly under Mattia Binotto, Jonathan Wheatley has “climbed the ladder” over nearly 40 years in Formula 1. When the former Ferrari team principal reached out, offering him the chance to become a central figure in Audi’s Four Rings project, Wheatley didn’t hesitate to seize the opportunity.
Previously Red Bull’s sporting director, Wheatley achieved multiple successes with the Milton Keynes team before deciding to take on the same leadership role that Christian Horner held—who, a few months later, would be replaced by Laurent Mekies.
“Back when I was a mechanic at Benetton, the team principals were Flavio Briatore and Ron Dennis. I never thought I would one day become one of them,” Wheatley said in an interview with Motorsport Week. “It seemed like an unreachable goal. I never put too much emphasis on climbing the career ladder; I’ve always focused on enjoying every day in F1. I’ve been very lucky to be recognized, from time to time, as someone ready to take the next step. Sometimes in a career, you get important calls, and the one from Audi was definitely one of those. Being team principal for Audi’s F1 project is one of the most thrilling things you can ever say in a sentence.”
Audi has already completed the filming day for the R26 in Barcelona, and on January 20 in Berlin, the entire F1 project will be officially presented in grand style.
Jonathan Wheatley’s remarkable ascent from the Benetton garage to the helm of Audi’s Formula 1 entry highlights the profound opportunities available to those who master the intricate operational world of the paddock. By stepping away from a dominant Red Bull team to build a new legacy with Mattia Binotto, Wheatley is embracing the ultimate test of leadership in the 2026 era. As the R26 prepares for its official unveiling in Berlin, all eyes will be on whether Wheatley’s extensive experience can transform the German manufacturer into a front-running force from day one.
