Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has praised Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable rise, comparing the Mercedes youngster to Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen while highlighting the humility that he believes sets the Italian apart. Herbert, who was far from convinced by Antonelli a year ago, has now changed his opinion dramatically as the 19-year-old approaches his first opportunity to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
With six potential opportunities to clinch the title remaining, Antonelli heads to Austin in a commanding position. His performances have also won over one of his former critics, with Herbert particularly impressed by the Italian’s consistency, mental strength and ability to deliver under pressure.
Johnny Herbert compares Kimi Antonelli to Senna, Hamilton and Verstappen
A year ago, relatively few observers were firmly backing Andrea Kimi Antonelli to become a future Formula 1 world champion, and Johnny Herbert certainly was not among those who believed unreservedly in the young Italian. However, the former F1 driver has now completely reassessed his opinion, offering considerable praise for the Mercedes star.
Speaking to Betpack, Herbert drew comparisons between Antonelli’s development and the early achievements of some of Formula 1’s most celebrated drivers.
“I think he should be put on the same level as drivers such as Ayrton Senna when he first started, Lewis when he made his debut and Max when he won his first race with Red Bull in Barcelona. Kimi was perhaps a little inconsistent last year, but, damn, he has really turned things around,” Johnny Herbert admitted.
The comparison reflects just how much Antonelli’s reputation has changed. The Italian’s progress has made him a leading contender for the championship, with his first of six potential title-clinching opportunities arriving in Austin.
Why Kimi Antonelli’s mental strength and humility have impressed Herbert
Beyond Antonelli’s results, Herbert believes the Mercedes driver’s response to difficult circumstances is particularly revealing. His ability to maintain consistent performances despite setbacks, including engine-related penalties, has convinced the former driver that the youngster possesses exceptional mental resilience.
“The consistency he is showing and his ability to perform at his best even in difficult situations with engine penalties demonstrate immense mental strength,” Johnny Herbert added.
“There is something extraordinary about him, despite his young age. And there is no arrogance, he is humble. He is a breath of fresh air, very different from what we have seen in the past with Max Verstappen, or even with Lewis Hamilton.”
For Herbert, that combination of competitive strength and humility makes Antonelli stand out even among Formula 1’s most accomplished talents. His change of opinion underlines the impression the Italian has made during his rise with Mercedes, with the prospect of a first world championship now firmly within reach.
