Williams continues to struggle against its direct rivals despite bringing its first upgrade package of the season to the Miami Grand Prix. The Grove-based team remains significantly behind in the development race for the FW48, partly due to setbacks that took place over the winter.
While the ninth and tenth-place finishes secured by Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon offered a degree of encouragement, the result alone is not enough to completely lift the mood inside the team.
Speaking about Williams’ development roadmap, team principal James Vowles expressed confidence that better results are on the horizon.
“What I know is that the work programme we have between now and the August break, and even slightly beyond that, should put us in a much more comfortable position where we’ll be scoring points consistently every race weekend from that point onward,” he said.
The objective remains clear: close the performance gap to the team’s closest midfield competitors.
“Until then, I think we should be able to get closer and closer to putting together the perfect weekend and scoring points, but not necessarily reaching fifth in the standings just yet. Right now, Alpine holds that position. We still have a few tenths to find,” he concluded.
As Williams navigates the challenging first half of the 2026 season, the focus remains on long-term stability rather than quick fixes. James Vowles’ strategic outlook suggests that while the FW48’s current performance floor is lower than anticipated, the planned technical revisions aimed at the late-summer window could redefine the team’s trajectory. For fans of the historic Grove outfit, the coming months will be a test of patience as the team works to unlock the latent potential of its current package and bridge the gap to the midfield leaders.
