The 2026 Formula 1 season continues to be an uphill battle for Williams. After a difficult start to the campaign, the Grove-based team finally managed to score its first points and now heads to the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring with 11 points on the board, placing it eighth in the Constructors’ Championship standings.
So far, however, the result falls well short of expectations. Williams entered the season hoping to build on the progress made in the previous campaign, but those ambitions were undermined even before pre-season testing began due to the difficulties encountered while setting up the FW48.
The team’s disappointing performances have inevitably placed the spotlight on Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz. If Williams fails to show signs of recovery, could the two drivers begin looking elsewhere for their future?
James Vowles dismisses concerns over Albon and Sainz
Williams Team Principal James Vowles addressed the situation in detail, explaining the strong relationship of trust he has built with both drivers.
“The fantastic thing about both of them is that they share the same values that I do, namely honesty and transparency. We’ve had open conversations since last October, when I first started noticing the problems, and then again in January and March as I explained what we are doing to solve them,” he said.
Vowles also made it clear that he believes both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz would be completely transparent if they were considering alternative opportunities elsewhere on the Formula 1 grid.
“If they were evaluating other options, they would come and talk to me about it. At the moment, they want their future to be here, and they’ve said that both to me and publicly to all of you.
“They would be foolish not to consider a call from a top team if a seat suddenly became available tomorrow, for example at Mercedes. But right now, they are committed to Williams because they appreciate the investments we are making.
“This winter we got it wrong. We have not provided a car that matches their level of performance, and my job is to correct that quickly and give them an environment where they can fight for podiums again.
“On top of that, Alex and Carlos have invested too much time and effort into making this team what they want it to become. This is their team, they feel like leaders here, and that is a unique situation on the grid,” he concluded.
Williams hoping for a turnaround
For the moment, the Alex Albon-Carlos Sainz driver pairing appears firmly established at Williams. Despite the team’s struggles, both drivers continue to play a central role in the long-term project being led by James Vowles.
Whether that situation remains unchanged will likely depend on how the remainder of the season unfolds and what opportunities emerge elsewhere on the grid. As always in Formula 1, the Silly Season can quickly reshape the driver market.
For now, however, Williams remains confident that both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz are fully committed to helping the team return to competitiveness and eventually challenge further up the field.
