McLaren’s Wisdom
Rather than focusing on the missed victory at Suzuka, McLaren seems to have concentrated on the positive aspects of the double podium and the 33 points brought home for the Constructors’ Championship. However, practically everyone in the paddock believes that the two papaya cars were the fastest in Japan and were only beaten by Max Verstappen’s immense talent, despite driving a car that was inferior.
Jacques Villeneuve Skeptical
Appearing as a guest on Sky Sport UK, 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve couldn’t understand McLaren’s attitude: “They don’t seem too disappointed. Which is strange because they should have been first and second.” The Canadian took a jab at the British team: “They weren’t slow, but they were beaten by a better team and a better driver, and that should hurt.”
For Jacques Villeneuve, the upcoming races will be particularly difficult for Red Bull and Max Verstappen: “Max will always be ready to take everything he can, but his car will struggle in the heat. It’s not easy to set up, and it will be even harder with the heat.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded at the end of the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.
