Wheel-to-wheel battles, but without hard feelings: Toto Wolff is confident that Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell will not repeat what happened between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The former Mercedes stars, teammates for four seasons from 2013 to 2016, were involved in the last true and intensely personal teammate rivalry in the Formula 1 paddock. It was a particularly tense situation that the Silver Arrows want to avoid in the future.
In Australia, George Russell took the win, while in China, Andrea Kimi Antonelli leveled the score. The Mercedes duo, now separated by only four points in the Drivers’ Championship, is delivering a spectacular show and hinting at a battle that could last the entire season. Both drivers grew up in the Brackley-based team’s junior program and understand the values and objectives of the German squad, which is why Toto Wolff is confident the fight will not escalate further.
“With Hamilton and Rosberg it was completely different,” the Austrian explained after the Chinese Grand Prix. “I mean, Nico and Lewis knew each other since karting, from the very beginning: they were friends, but there was also this kind of constant social competition. And then that friendship became a rivalry, and eventually hostility, and they were two very different personalities.”
Wolff: “Drivers want to win, but responsibility is key”
“That said, we have to understand that the drivers are here to win races and championships, and once you sense that possibility, it’s clear that elbows start to fly,” continued Toto Wolff. “It’s something the team has to manage. But both are Mercedes juniors, and we have been responsible for their development since they entered single-seaters, Kimi even since his karting days.”
“So I think that, at this stage, and maybe one day I’ll have to take back my words, we are in a completely different situation.”
The maturity of both George Russell and the teenage sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be tested as the points gap remains tight. As the F1 circus heads to Japan, the focus will be on whether they can maintain this respectful edge or if the pressure of the 2026 regulations will eventually spark the kind of friction Wolff hopes to avoid. For now, the Silver Arrows appear to be flying in formation, even as they fight for the lead.
