Carlos Sainz is going through one of the most delicate phases of his Formula 1 career: his move to Williams has not delivered the expected results, and the future outlook is far less clear than it initially appeared.
The Spanish driver has not hidden the difficulties experienced at the start of the season. “It was a shock for me, for the team… we knew it was going to be difficult, but not like this,” Sainz admitted. Weight issues and overall performance limitations of the car have slowed down the team’s progress, making the development path more complicated than expected.
And while future scenarios continue to be discussed, the possibility of a move to Red Bull has also emerged. However, not everyone is convinced by this option. Former driver Riccardo Patrese was very direct: “If he wants to leave, where does he go? Leaving Williams wouldn’t make sense… Red Bull? They are losing key figures, it could even be worse.”
According to Riccardo Patrese, the main issue remains the lack of realistic alternatives. Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes all appear to have their driver line-ups already defined, leaving Sainz in a difficult and somewhat uncomfortable position on the market.
Despite everything, some hope still remains. Williams, coming off signs of gradual improvement, could still reverse its trajectory: “They have shown they are improving, the Mercedes engine is a strong point… we will see if they can take another step forward,” the Italian added.
Sainz’s future therefore remains an open puzzle: changing teams might not necessarily be the solution, but staying also comes with its own set of risks.
Carlos Sainz’s current predicament at Williams underscores the volatile nature of the Formula 1 driver market during a major regulatory shift. While the allure of a top-tier seat at Red Bull remains strong, the internal instability at Milton Keynes suggests that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. As the 2026 season progresses, Carlos Sainz and his management must decide whether to trust in the long-term potential of the Williams-Mercedes project or gamble on a team currently in a state of transition. For a driver of Carlos Sainz’s caliber, the next move will likely define his legacy in the sport for years to come.
