Is Mercedes treating Kimi Antonelli differently from George Russell?. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli treatment raises questions at Mercedes.

George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes 2025

Is Mercedes genuinely treating George Russell and Kimi Antonelli differently, or has the Italian driver’s rapid rise merely created that perception within the team?

Mercedes may be setting the technical standard during the 2026 Formula 1 season, but an increasingly delicate dynamic is developing between its two drivers. George Russell, the more experienced member of the partnership, finds himself chasing Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian talent who currently leads the Drivers’ Championship.

Statements from Toto Wolff and the wider behaviour of the team have contributed to a perceived difference in how the two drivers are treated. The relationship can be compared to that between an older and a younger brother, with the younger sibling apparently receiving greater attention, affection and protection from the father figure represented by Mercedes and its team principal.

This is not necessarily evidence of deliberate favouritism. Mercedes continues to support both drivers publicly and insists that the partnership is functioning well. Nevertheless, the tone surrounding Kimi Antonelli’s achievements often appears warmer and more celebratory, while George Russell is repeatedly placed in a position where he must prove his value again.

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli follow contrasting seasons

George Russell entered the season as one of the leading favourites for the Formula 1 title. With a multi-year contract and an established role within Mercedes, the British driver had already demonstrated consistency, experience and an ability to contribute to the development of the car.

However, George Russell’s campaign has been affected by several unfortunate episodes, including retirements and problems with straight-line speed. Those setbacks have left him 50 points behind Kimi Antonelli in the championship. The internal and media focus now appears to be directed more towards George Russell’s difficulties than towards his overall contribution to Mercedes.

His Belgian Grand Prix was the clearest example. After losing power and battery deployment immediately after the start, George Russell was passed before retiring following contact with Lewis Hamilton. Although he described the collision as a racing incident, his frustration was evident when he said that he wanted his car to be the same as Kimi Antonelli’s.

Mercedes had already worked to improve the W17’s straight-line efficiency at Spa-Francorchamps, making George Russell’s sudden loss of performance particularly damaging. The incident added to the impression that the more experienced driver is being asked to manage frustration while Kimi Antonelli continues to receive most of the attention generated by the team’s success.

Toto Wolff has repeatedly confirmed his confidence in George Russell and expressed a desire to maintain the partnership into 2027. Even so, George Russell often appears to occupy a position in which he must continually reconfirm his importance to Mercedes.

Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, has transformed his second Formula 1 season into a period of partial domination. With multiple victories, pole positions and a clear lead in the Drivers’ Championship, the 19-year-old Italian represents both pure talent and the freshness of a new generation.

Mercedes regularly highlights Kimi Antonelli’s natural speed, resilience and ability to cope with pressure. Toto Wolff has described him as a driver who is “clearly very fast” and in whom the team has invested heavily. The wider narrative consequently presents Kimi Antonelli as the future face of Mercedes.

His Belgian Grand Prix triumph strengthened that image further. Kimi Antonelli’s victory at Spa-Francorchamps was widely presented as a moment of redemption after the difficulties he experienced at the same circuit one year earlier, while his performance also earned public praise following his record-equalling success.

Is Mercedes treating Kimi Antonelli differently?

Mercedes and Toto Wolff adopt a balanced approach in official statements. The team maintains that its driver line-up works, that it has no desire to make a change and that both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are highly valued.

However, subtle differences can still be detected. Kimi Antonelli is surrounded by an atmosphere of celebration when he succeeds and protection when he encounters difficulties. George Russell is supported as well, but he is more frequently asked to absorb disappointment, control his frustration and demonstrate resilience within the increasingly competitive relationship between the two drivers.

George Russell’s radio request for the same car was especially revealing. It did not prove that Mercedes had deliberately given the drivers different machinery, but it demonstrated how strongly the British driver felt that his own opportunities were being compromised. Mercedes later explained that software and energy deployment issues had contributed to the problem.

The technical complications extended beyond George Russell’s car. Toto Wolff subsequently said that Mercedes-powered cars had experienced straight-line performance limitations at Spa, raising further questions about the FIA’s ADUO ranking and the relative strength of the manufacturers’ power units.

The apparent disparity between the drivers is therefore not explicit, but it can be perceived. The contribution of the older brother appears to be taken for granted, while the younger brother’s contribution is celebrated as the fulfilment of a promise and the beginning of the family’s future.

George Russell takes the role of the responsible older brother

Within this comparison, George Russell represents the older brother: responsible, experienced and loyal to the Mercedes project over several years. He brings stability, technical understanding and a proven capacity to lead the team through difficult periods.

George Russell has consistently contributed to Mercedes’ development with commitment and professionalism, but he has not always received the same degree of celebration. His achievements can be regarded as the expected output of an established driver rather than something new or extraordinary.

Kimi Antonelli represents the younger brother. He brings the excitement of novelty, immediate results and a level of talent that naturally attracts attention. His rise has given Mercedes a powerful story: a young Italian developed by the team who is now leading the Formula 1 World Championship.

Mercedes and Toto Wolff appear to reserve particular care for Kimi Antonelli, offering greater protection from excessive pressure, warmer public praise and a narrative that presents him as the team’s chosen heir. This dynamic does not remove George Russell’s value, but it can create a perception that Kimi Antonelli is favoured, celebrated more enthusiastically when he succeeds and more readily excused when difficulties arise.

That distinction matters because Formula 1 drivers are highly sensitive to the internal signals sent by their teams. Confidence does not depend only on contracts, public declarations or equal equipment. It is also shaped by communication, recognition and the sense that a driver’s contribution is valued as strongly as that of his teammate.

Mercedes must turn rivalry into a collective strength

Mercedes has chosen continuity by confirming George Russell alongside Kimi Antonelli at least until 2027. It is a sensible decision that avoids unnecessary disruption, but it also requires careful management of the psychological relationship between the two drivers.

Toto Wolff must balance his praise and attention so that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli both feel equally valued. George Russell’s experience, consistency and technical contribution are as essential to Mercedes as Kimi Antonelli’s flashes of brilliance and exceptional results.

Without addressing the perception that greater affection is being shown to the younger brother, Mercedes risks allowing hidden resentment to develop. Over time, that frustration could affect performance, communication and harmony within the garage, particularly if both drivers remain involved in the Drivers’ Championship.

The tension could become even more significant if reliability continues to influence the title race. Mercedes possesses a highly competitive package, but recent problems have shown that a technical advantage does not automatically guarantee a calm internal environment. Every retirement or performance discrepancy can intensify questions about fairness.

The complete Belgian Grand Prix finishing order illustrated the contrasting fortunes of the Mercedes drivers: Kimi Antonelli won the race, while George Russell retired on the opening lap. Weekends featuring such dramatic differences will inevitably place additional strain on the relationship.

In Formula 1, as in a relationship between siblings, the older and younger brother can coexist and prosper only when the father figure recognises the value of both fairly. Mercedes must ensure that Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable rise does not make George Russell feel overlooked or treated merely as the dependable senior member of the partnership.

The future of the pairing will depend on Mercedes’ ability to transform their rivalry into collective momentum. If Toto Wolff can maintain equality while allowing both drivers to pursue their ambitions, the competition could push the team to an even higher level. If the perception of unbalanced affection is allowed to grow, however, it could gradually erode the unity of the Mercedes garage.
