Not everyone believes this is the best solution. In particular, doubts surround the comparison between the two future teammates. Liam Lawson has already gained some F1 experience, but he may not yet have the sporting maturity required to withstand a partner like Max Verstappen, who has consistently put his teammates in difficulty.
Former F1 driver Anthony Davidson weighed in on the topic, stating: “It’s a bit risky to put a driver up against Max Verstappen when he’s at his peak.” The Dutchman will enter the 2025 season as the reigning champion, boasting four titles. Despite Red Bull’s struggles in 2024, Max managed to lead the team to victory for the fourth time, proving himself a fast, consistent driver who is always focused on his goal.
Before reaching success, Verstappen faced heavy criticism for his aggressive racing style. Over time, however, he refined his approach and driving technique, allowing him to outperform his teammates even when battling in the midfield.
“He destroys his teammates. Who would have thought that what he did to Daniel Ricciardo would make Ricciardo feel forced to move on and go to Renault?”
Davidson first mentioned Daniel Ricciardo but also recalled drivers like Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon. In 2019, they each raced half a season, as the Frenchman was dropped by Red Bull due to a lack of results.
Then there’s Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver has occasionally shown flashes of competitiveness. However, aside from those few moments, he has struggled in the comparison, often appearing as the team’s weak link.
Referring to past experiences, Davidson expressed concern for Liam Lawson. However, he acknowledged that the young driver might be Red Bull’s only viable option to replace Sergio Perez, who, in 2025, had disappointed more than ever before.
