In Faenza, a state-of-the-art fuel cell cogeneration plant has been inaugurated, marking both a symbolic and concrete step towards a new vision of motorsport. Racing Bulls officially launched its new energy system, a project that combines advanced technology, sustainability, and strong ties to the local community.
This investment speaks to the future, energy independence, and an industrial model aiming to become a reference point not only for Formula 1 but for the entire motorsport sector.
A plant combining innovation, local roots, and sustainability
The new facility is located within the Racing Bulls Green Energy Park, a 14,500-square-meter area adjacent to the main headquarters. Here, a next-generation photovoltaic system coexists with a solid oxide fuel cell developed by Cefla, powered by certified biomethane sourced from local partners.
This synergy ensures a reliable and self-sufficient energy supply, strengthens community ties, and aligns with sustainability goals shared by Red Bull, Formula 1, and the FIA. The Fuel Cell technology allows an annual average production of 4.6 GWh of carbon-free electricity. Efficiency is further enhanced by heat recovery, which covers the site’s entire heating needs, while water-free operation minimizes environmental impact. This model eliminates noise pollution, drastically reduces emissions, and sets a new standard for energy efficiency in motorsport.
In this context, Enrico Fastelli, Facility Management & HSE Director of Racing Bulls, emphasized the project’s significance:
“I am excited to highlight our commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of our operations and achieving true energy independence. By establishing strong partnerships with local suppliers, we are not only reducing emissions but also promoting innovation and growth within our community. By maximizing opportunities for synergy with the local area, we are fostering the development of skills and partnerships to the benefit of all involved.”
The shared vision of Racing Bulls and Cefla
The project is also the result of a long-standing industrial collaboration rooted in local history. Cefla, founded in 1932 in Imola, proudly traces a path that now projects into the future of sustainability.
President Gianmaria Balducci explained the initiative’s value:
“In 1932, Cefla was founded in Imola with a clear mission: engineering excellence in the service of progress. Today, exactly one year after the start of our partnership with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, we celebrate a milestone that projects that same vision into the future of sustainability. We are inaugurating a Nova Solution by Cefla plant, already active and fully operational. It makes us very proud to see how our history, full of major achievements, now gains a new chapter where Italian technological innovation guarantees energy self-sufficiency for such a prestigious partner.”
Mario Gargano, Sales Director BL Energy at Cefla, also highlighted the project’s uniqueness:
“The Faenza Fuel Cell plant demonstrates what can be achieved when technological innovation meets environmental responsibility. The plant is unique on the market, with 550 kW of fuel cells directly powered by biomethane produced at the nearby Caviro facility, with zero emissions. This plant not only enables innovative technology but also serves as an excellent example of how local companies can collaborate. At Cefla, we are proud to actively contribute to projects of this kind.”
The Faenza plant is more than just a technological infrastructure: it is a manifesto. It demonstrates that Formula 1 can be a laboratory for sustainable solutions, that innovation can emerge from local territories, and that the energy transition is not an abstract concept but a journey shaped by concrete choices.
