The Formula 1 season has only just begun, but for Liam Lawson, things are already looking difficult. After a tough weekend in Melbourne, the New Zealander disappointed again in Shanghai, finishing last in both qualifying sessions. This poor result has raised concerns within Red Bull, to the point where his seat may already be in jeopardy.
Lawson, chosen as Max Verstappen’s new teammate following Sergio Perez’s departure, now risks seeing his future compromised before it has even properly begun. Meanwhile, over at Racing Bulls, another rookie, Isack Hadjar, is making an impression. Despite never having raced in China before, the Frenchman managed to reach Q3, showing his ability to seize every opportunity. This direct comparison could accelerate Helmut Marko’s decision-making, as the Red Bull advisor has hinted that patience with Lawson is limited.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Red Bull’s top consultant stated: “We will discuss it calmly. We still have several drivers in our academy who can prove their worth. Thank God we are in a good position.”
The Austrian added: “Hadjar is putting in incredible lap times in just his second race, without making mistakes. What he has shown so far is absolutely fascinating. Formula 1 is a competitive sport, and we will see what happens.”
Marko’s statements come amid growing speculation about an early promotion for Yuki Tsunoda to Red Bull, possibly as soon as the Japanese GP in two weeks. Asked about the rumors by PlanetF1, Yuki Tsunoda responded: “I’d be ready to debut in Japan. Without a doubt, the Red Bull is faster.”
Lawson’s future now appears anything but certain. To regain the team’s trust, he must deliver a flawless performance in tomorrow’s race. It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to convince Marko to keep the young New Zealander, or if a new face will soon line up alongside Max Verstappen.
