Max Verstappen is an extraordinary driver, and he proved it throughout the weekend by beating the McLaren of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. This season, he has been the only non-papaya driver to secure three wins, at Suzuka, Imola, and Monza.
Helmut Marko surprised by the gap over McLaren
Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s senior advisor, did not hide his amazement at Verstappen’s performance, dominating at Monza with a margin that seemed unimaginable just a few weeks ago. The Austrian executive analyzed the result in the context of the team’s recent progress, starting from the Hungarian Grand Prix:
“Twenty seconds ahead of the McLaren, wow! Just a few races ago, in Hungary, we were struggling even to fight for points. After last year, when we had one of our worst races here, this is an extraordinary comeback by Red Bull and demonstrates our full strength. It’s a shame it came a bit late, as the championship has already slipped away, but we still want to win more races. Honestly, before coming here, we didn’t think there was a chance to put pressure on McLaren. From the Dutch Grand Prix onwards, we understood the car better, and today Max returned motivated. But being this dominant is truly another story.”
