Toto Wolff has every reason to celebrate after the Chinese Grand Prix. Not only for Mercedes’ victory, but also because the team principal seems to have fully won the bet he made about a year ago. Many considered it a gamble to bring eighteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli into a top-tier team like Mercedes, yet just over a year later, the Italian driver has shown that Wolff’s faith was well placed. The British manager has nurtured the Bolognese talent since he was very young, and now he is reaping the rewards with a win that also marks a historic moment for Italy, which has returned to the top step of a Formula 1 podium after twenty years.
Wolff: “Kimi showed Russell he still had more to give”
Of course, Toto Wolff began by praising Antonelli after his first career victory in Formula 1. “This moment was never in doubt for Kimi. Since his karting days, we knew he had all the talent needed to become a Grand Prix winner. His family, along with the team, has done an extraordinary job nurturing that talent, and today’s result is proof of that.”
The Mercedes team principal also addressed those who had doubted the young Italian driver. “Many questioned him, saying it was too early, that he didn’t have the composure required, and Kimi has proven them all wrong. This is only the beginning for him; he will remain grounded and continue to work hard, but he can certainly enjoy this moment.”
Wolff also highlighted Antonelli’s excellent race management, especially in the duel with George Russell, who had a challenging weekend despite securing pole position and winning the Sprint format. The British driver struggled in qualifying for the Sunday race due to an issue that prevented him from delivering his best in Q3. However, once again, the W17 proved dominant, allowing Russell to minimize the damage on Saturday and maximize the result on Sunday. “Kimi was smart because at the end he made Russell realize he still had some margin, stopping George’s late comeback attempt. The F1 winners’ club at Mercedes grows: Fangio, Moss, Rosberg, Hamilton, Bottas, Russell, and Antonelli.” Today, the young Italian talent joins a truly prestigious list.
Wolff reflects on the race and challenges from Ferrari
Finally, the Mercedes team principal summed up the race and the challenges posed by Ferrari, which at times gave the Silver Arrows drivers a tough afternoon. “Despite the result, it wasn’t an easy day for the team. The Ferraris pushed us hard, and George did an excellent job recovering and finishing ahead of them. It was also fantastic to see Lewis on the podium with Kimi, George, and Bono. All four are an essential part of the team’s history, and it was wonderful to see them up there together. We’ve started the season well, but there’s still much work to do. We’ll stay focused, keep giving our maximum effort, and hope to continue fighting for victories throughout the season.”
Toto Wolff’s unwavering faith in Kimi Antonelli has been therefore vindicated on the global stage. As the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses, the synergy between the veteran leadership at Mercedes and their young Italian prodigy suggests that the Brackley squad is prepared to defend its new era of dominance against all challengers.
