After just two races of the revolutionary 2026 Formula 1 season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli already finds himself second in the drivers’ standings, sitting just behind his Mercedes teammate George Russell.
The brilliant and highly impressive victory in China has sparked what many are now calling “Antonelli mania”, with experts, analysts, and paddock observers quick to praise the bold decision made by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, while some have even gone as far as suggesting that the young Italian could already be a contender in the title fight. However, not everyone shares this growing enthusiasm. One of the most notable dissenting voices is that of former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, the charismatic Italian engineer who spent eight seasons leading the American team and managing, on many occasions, the ups and downs typical of rookie drivers.
Speaking on The Red Flags podcast, Guenther Steiner analyzed the Shanghai weekend and explained how Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victory came together, pointing out that it was also helped by a couple of issues that affected George Russell’s car during the qualifying sessions in China.
“I think it gives him a lot of confidence because he had an opportunity, because under normal circumstances, at the moment, beating George Russell is very difficult. And I think he knows that, not because he is a better driver: George Russell has a lot more experience. Andrea Kimi Antonelli is doing all of this at a very young age, and he is also very fast. As soon as George Russell was not able to maximize his qualifying performance, he took the opportunity and made the most of it.”
It was a victory that certainly builds confidence, and one that Guenther Steiner particularly praised for the way it was achieved, especially considering the pressure and complexity of the race situation.
“He didn’t make any mistakes. He realizes that, and that will help him going forward. He didn’t do anything wrong. It would be very easy to make a mistake when you are in that position. He stayed calm.”
However, when asked whether Andrea Kimi Antonelli could realistically challenge George Russell for the championship title this season, the former Haas team principal offered a rather cautious and measured response, giving the young Italian only limited chances.
“No. Unless something special happens, like what happened in China in qualifying. And the positive thing is that he took advantage of it there. But under normal circumstances… I think it is also understandable why not. The guy is 19 years old, he is in his second year in Formula 1, and George Russell is a very good driver. So I don’t think he can do it this year, but there will be other opportunities for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. If he doesn’t win this year, he can win another time because he is so young. For me, he should not put too much pressure on himself to win this year. He has a great future ahead of him.”
It is still very early in the season to draw definitive conclusions, and placing excessive expectations on Andrea Kimi Antonelli or overhyping his chances of fighting for the championship may not necessarily be beneficial for such a young and promising talent. At the same time, however, it is undeniable that the Mercedes drivers currently benefit from having a car that appears more competitive than most of the field, and it is equally true that opportunities like these do not always come around often in Formula 1.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli will therefore need to continue being ready to seize every opportunity that comes his way, while minimizing mistakes as much as possible. If he can maintain this level of composure and performance, it would not be surprising to hear the Italian national anthem playing again on podiums around the world. And beyond that… anything could still happen.
