During Minardi Day, Giancarlo Minardi spoke about Kimi Antonelli, highlighting how the young Italian Mercedes driver represents a real promise for the future of Formula 1, and did not shy away from drawing a comparison with a great like Fernando Alonso. Minardi recalled the early steps of the Bolognese driver and the commitment he has shown throughout his competitive growth.
“Kimi is a driver who has followed all the necessary paths to reach where he is,” Minardi said. “He was one of the first to attend the Aci Kart Summer Camp when he was under 12 years old. He won all the junior formulas, and even though he did not win the Formula 2 championship, Mercedes immediately signed him.”
He added: “He has signed agreements step by step, not just a random contract at 18. Today he is a Mercedes driver, and for me, from the first day in karting, I had the same feelings with him that I had with other champions who made history, including one who is 44 and still racing,” referring to Alonso.
Minardi urged the audience, and especially the press, to support Antonelli rather than excessively criticize him: “Now it is up to all of us to help him, because I see too much criticism. He started as he should, had a moment of difficulty, partly due to youthful mistakes that are normal at 19, and some management errors. At Monza, he recovered well despite a small mistake, and this shows that he is growing.”
According to Minardi, the foundation of the young talent’s success is not only natural predisposition but also consistent work and proper technical support. “His path has been built in the right way. I believe he will entertain us soon,” he added.
Minardi also stressed the importance of finally having an Italian driver consistently in Formula 1. “We are fortunate to have, after a long time, an Italian driver in F1. At least for one year, his presence is guaranteed. Now we must support him and give him confidence.”
Minardi’s words confirm the strong faith that Italian motorsport places in Antonelli—a precocious talent already at the heart of Formula 1, who with the right support can become the protagonist of a new era for Italian racing colors.
