Former F1 driver Martin Brundle believes that 2026 could be the year for British Mercedes driver George Russell to finally challenge for the world championship.
Countdown to Melbourne
With just weeks remaining before the start of the 2026 season, it is even more difficult than in previous years to predict which driver or team will dominate the championship, especially in a year that marks the beginning of a new era in Formula 1. Attention naturally falls on the top teams, from reigning champions McLaren to Ferrari, including Red Bull powered by Ford and, of course, Mercedes.
The next champion?
Regarding Mercedes, several former drivers have highlighted George Russell as a potential title winner for 2026, and television commentator Martin Brundle has now added his voice to the chorus. According to the 66-year-old, Russell could take full advantage of the opportunity to redeem himself after seasons that did not fully showcase his talent:
“Russell needs to realize that here there is a real chance to win a world championship,” Brundle told Sky Sports. “George’s experience will show. If I were to make a prediction, I would put everything on him for the entire season, but both he and Antonelli will be incredibly strong.”
Mercedes and Antonelli
For Brundle, 2026 may be the perfect moment for Russell in a team that pairs him with Kimi Antonelli:
“Kimi has received a lot of support from the team: from Toto and everyone else. He is the designated heir, that’s quite obvious. He doesn’t always have to look over his shoulder. He can simply get guidance from Bono (Peter Bonnington, his race engineer), which is fantastic for him. What a fantastic duo they have! George spent a long time at Williams before moving to Mercedes just when they had stopped winning practically everything. He gave his all, and perhaps this is his moment.”
Brundle’s comments underscore the growing excitement around Mercedes’ driver line-up and suggest that George Russell may finally have the tools, experience, and team support to fight for the championship in 2026.
