George Russell set for major Mercedes contract renewal with salary matching Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. George Russell is set to sign a multi-year contract extension with Mercedes.

Only the announcement is missing
Max Verstappen has now made his decision to remain loyal to Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Formula 1 season. This strategic choice allows the Dutch driver to stay in a competitive position while retaining the flexibility to evaluate the grid dynamics for the 2027 season. Should Red Bull Racing prove uncompetitive under the new regulations introduced for 2026, Verstappen will still have the opportunity to consider a potential move to another leading team. Committing earlier without clear guarantees on the balance of power on the track would have been a significant risk for the three-time World Champion, who now opts to keep his options open.

Max Verstappen’s decision to stay with Red Bull has had a ripple effect across the driver market, effectively unlocking the next step in George Russell’s future with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. In fact, several reports emerging from the United Kingdom suggest that the British driver’s contract renewal is already finalized in terms of the most crucial aspects: salary and contract length.

According to an article published by the Daily Mail and written by the well-informed journalist Jonathan McEvoy, George Russell and Mercedes have reached an agreement on a multi-year contract extension. The new deal reportedly includes a salary package in the region of £30 million per season. This figure places Russell among the highest-paid drivers on the current Formula 1 grid, alongside Charles Leclerc at Scuderia Ferrari and Lando Norris at McLaren.

While Russell had hoped to negotiate for an even higher salary, his current record of four career victories in Formula 1 and a fanbase that, while significant, does not yet rival that of the sport’s biggest stars, meant Mercedes maintained a firm negotiating position. As a result, his earnings fall below the top-tier contracts of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, who remain the two highest-paid drivers in the paddock.

Nonetheless, the deal is still highly advantageous for George Russell. As part of the new agreement, he will reportedly have reduced obligations when it comes to bringing in personal sponsorships, although this reduced requirement will be reflected in the overall salary structure. However, the multi-year duration of the contract represents a clear show of trust and confidence from Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, reinforcing Russell’s status as a cornerstone of the team’s future plans.

The expected announcement of this long-term renewal cements George Russell’s role as a central figure in Mercedes’ ambitions beyond the 2025 season, especially as the team looks to return to consistent title contention in the upcoming regulation era.
