George Russell insists he never feared losing his Mercedes seat to Max Verstappen, despite years of speculation linking the Red Bull driver with a move to the Silver Arrows. The British driver addressed the rumours at Zandvoort after Max Verstappen ended uncertainty over his future by extending his Red Bull contract until the end of 2030.
Max Verstappen’s decision was one of the biggest talking points in the Dutch Grand Prix paddock. The four-time world champion’s new agreement puts an end to a long-running stream of speculation over whether he could eventually leave Red Bull, with Mercedes repeatedly mentioned as one of his possible destinations.
Max Verstappen ends Mercedes speculation with Red Bull renewal
For a considerable period, including during previous seasons, Mercedes had been viewed as a potential destination for Max Verstappen if the Dutchman decided to leave his long-time team. His new contract with Red Bull, however, will now keep him at the Milton Keynes squad through the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season.
Speaking during the media-day press conference at Zandvoort, George Russell dismissed suggestions that the possibility of Max Verstappen joining Mercedes had ever made him feel insecure about his own future. The British driver suggested that the subject became a concern mainly when questions from the media brought the speculation back into focus.
George Russell says his Mercedes seat was never in doubt
“The rumours about Max at Mercedes? Well, it only becomes a thought for us when we’re in front of you guys in the media and you ask us these questions and remind us about what’s being talked about,” George Russell said, directing some criticism towards the journalists present.
“From our side, it has always been very clear within Mercedes what the reality has been over the last few years. Maybe those discussions [between Verstappen’s management and Mercedes] became more public than the discussions his entourage had with McLaren or Ferrari, but that’s the nature of this sport: drivers talk to different teams, teams talk to different drivers, and everyone wants to see what cards everyone else is holding.”
“But I never felt threatened when it came to my seat. I’ve always had a sense of security with Toto and within the team, and obviously all of that will continue.”
The comments underline the confidence George Russell says he has maintained in his position at Mercedes throughout the prolonged Verstappen speculation. While talks and rumours surrounding Formula 1’s leading drivers inevitably formed part of the wider driver market, Russell says the internal situation at Mercedes was always considerably clearer than it appeared from the outside.
Verstappen decision removes a major F1 driver-market question
Max Verstappen’s extension now removes one of the biggest uncertainties surrounding Formula 1’s future driver market. For George Russell, however, the announcement does not change how he views his own position: he maintains that Toto Wolff and Mercedes consistently gave him a sense of security even when speculation about a possible Verstappen move was at its strongest.
