George Russell reveals the mental challenge of being teammates with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. George Russell on racing alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton, 2024 F1

George Russell has opened up about how he coped with the immense pressure of having Lewis Hamilton as his teammate at Mercedes, revealing a lesser-known side of the internal challenge he faced within the team.

In an interview on the Untapped podcast, George Russell admitted that sharing a garage with Lewis Hamilton was far from easy. The experience was so demanding that he sought professional psychological support to help him deal with the mental strain of competing alongside one of Formula 1’s greatest drivers.

Being paired with the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion was not only a sporting challenge but also a deep mental test, one that ultimately reshaped his career and forced him to develop new levels of resilience.

The toughest challenge inside the Mercedes garage
When George Russell left Williams to step up to Mercedes, he knew he was facing a unique opportunity and an equally daunting challenge: going head-to-head with Lewis Hamilton, widely regarded as one of the most successful and talented drivers in the history of the sport.

Russell revealed that he worked with a psychologist in preparation for that defining moment in his career. “I had to understand how to mentally deal with the pressure of sharing a garage with him,” Russell explained. “In the end, I realized that my destiny was only in my own hands, from the moment I lowered the visor and got into the car.”

The experience of racing alongside Hamilton was not simply a battle of lap times or raw performance. According to Russell, it also became a constant psychological contest, a daily struggle to maintain focus and self-belief while competing against such an accomplished teammate.

The British driver said that the support he received was crucial in helping him shift his focus back onto himself, rather than constantly being weighed down by direct comparisons with Hamilton. This mental approach quickly paid off: across the three seasons they spent together, Russell managed to finish ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship standings twice. This was an unprecedented achievement, as no teammate of the seven-time World Champion had ever managed to outscore him in multiple seasons.

A defining experience for Russell’s career
Now, with Lewis Hamilton having made the high-profile switch to Ferrari and George Russell established as the undisputed team leader at Mercedes, those experiences carry even greater significance.

They not only hardened Russell as a driver but also underlined how Formula 1 is not just about speed, car performance, and raw talent. It is also a sport where mental resilience, psychological strength, and the ability to handle pressure are just as important in defining success at the very highest level.
