George Russell continues to establish himself as one of the most consistent and mature drivers currently competing in the Formula 1 World Championship. He is arguably experiencing the most competitive and stable phase of his career so far, yet paradoxically, it is also the most uncertain moment regarding his future in the sport. As the second half of the 2025 Formula 1 season approaches, and following several strong performances that have reinforced his standing within the team, the British driver has made it clear that he does not intend to sign a contract renewal with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team during the summer break. He emphasized that there is no pressure or rush to make a decision—his aim remains to identify the ideal moment to solidify a long-term agreement that gives him guarantees for the years to come.
No contract renewal announcement expected during the summer break
Many Formula 1 insiders and fans have been asking whether there is any progress in the negotiations between Mercedes and George Russell. The question on everyone’s mind is: what is the German team waiting for to extend Russell’s contract? However, the British driver has underlined that there will be no announcement during the summer hiatus. According to George Russell himself, he needs time to reflect and recharge before making any commitments.
“Nothing will happen this summer. I want to recharge my batteries. There is no urgency, it will happen when the time is right,” George Russell told Sky Sports F1.
In recent months, several rumors have emerged regarding a potential move by Max Verstappen to Mercedes, a development that would have significant implications for both George Russell and the young Italian talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is also in contention for a full-time seat. However, during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen confirmed that he intends to remain with Red Bull Racing at least until the end of the 2026 season. This timeframe may prove to be the key factor in Mercedes’ future driver lineup decisions.
George Russell and his future at Mercedes… or elsewhere
George Russell has claimed four victories in his Formula 1 career so far, showing remarkable consistency even during periods when the Mercedes car has not been competitive enough to fight at the front. With the major regulation changes scheduled for the 2026 season, and given various reports from Italian and international sources suggesting that Mercedes’ next-generation power unit may lead the field, Russell is hopeful of having a car capable of fighting for the World Championship. For that reason, he is aiming for a multi-year deal that extends well beyond the 2026 season.
“I’ve been with this team for four years, and next year will be my fifth. We want to continue together, but we need the right conditions and time to make the decision,” he reiterated.
Team principal Toto Wolff, while not hiding his interest in Max Verstappen, has reiterated his confidence in George Russell’s talent. The Austrian executive pointed to the Briton’s impressive performances, including his victory at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix and a strong podium finish in the 2025 edition of the same race.
“George has always had strong credentials. His position within the team is solid, and the results speak for themselves,” Toto Wolff stated.
Nevertheless, George Russell’s results, however respectable, do not appear to be enough to grant him full long-term security at Mercedes. The team continues to place significant emphasis on the development of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young Italian driver seen as a future star. Mercedes does not want to lose Antonelli, but at the same time, the opportunity to sign Max Verstappen in just over a year cannot be overlooked.
For his part, George Russell is playing the waiting game. He is seeking a long-term contract to secure his place in Formula 1’s elite—otherwise, he may begin to evaluate offers from rival teams.
Who will win this battle of wills? The outcome may well shape Mercedes’ future for years to come.
