George Russell faces what could be one of the most important weekends of his 2026 Formula 1 title challenge at Monza, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli set to start the Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid. Martin Brundle believes the opportunity could represent a “last chance” for the Mercedes driver to close the gap and avoid being pushed into a supporting role later in the season.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has already highlighted how Antonelli’s penalty changes the competitive picture at Monza, declaring: “We are two against one.” With the Italian starting from the rear, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could find themselves fighting primarily against Russell at the front of the field.
George Russell under pressure to capitalise at Monza
With Antonelli forced to start from the back, Monza becomes a major opportunity for George Russell to revive his championship hopes. The Briton cannot afford to let such a favourable situation pass without significantly reducing the deficit to his Mercedes team-mate.
According to Martin Brundle, the Italian Grand Prix could therefore become a decisive moment in Russell’s season.
“This weekend he has a great opportunity to close the gap and prove that he fully deserves the World Championship. His weekend seems to have started well,” Martin Brundle said in his role as a Sky Sports UK pundit.
“It is something of a last chance if he wants to avoid becoming Antonelli’s wingman, forced to work for the Italian in order to protect Kimi’s championship lead from the attacks of Ferrari and McLaren.”
Antonelli penalty changes Mercedes title dynamic
The situation is particularly significant because Kimi Antonelli arrives at his home Grand Prix as the championship leader but will have to recover from the rear of the field after taking a power unit penalty.
That gives Russell a rare opportunity to make substantial ground in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings. If he cannot take advantage, Mercedes could eventually be forced to consider prioritising Antonelli’s championship campaign as the season enters its decisive stages.
The Italian could even play a role in helping his team-mate before the race. With the slipstream particularly valuable at Monza, Antonelli could potentially provide Russell with a tow during qualifying if Mercedes decides that maximising the Briton’s starting position is the best strategic option.
Whether Mercedes chooses to use Antonelli in that way remains to be seen, but the Italian Grand Prix has created an unusual dynamic inside the team. Russell has a major opportunity to cut into his team-mate’s advantage, while Antonelli faces the completely different challenge of recovering through the field from the back of the grid.
Monza will now show whether Russell can turn that opportunity into the kind of result required to keep his World Championship ambitions alive.
