George Russell has emphasized the importance of setting realistic goals in Formula 1, an approach that has helped him navigate the challenges of his career and avoid what he describes as a “psychological struggle.”
The British driver made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 with Williams, during a particularly difficult period for the Grove-based team, far from the front-running positions. From the very beginning, Russell had to fight in the midfield and focus on achievable targets rather than outright victories. His move to Mercedes in 2022, taking over from Valtteri Bottas, seemed to open a new chapter, especially given the team’s dominance over the previous eight seasons. However, the challenges faced by Mercedes with the introduction of the new ground effect regulations forced a recalibration of expectations and ambitions.
George Russell’s mental approach
In an interview on the podcast Untapped, George Russell explained how managing expectations has become a central part of his working method: “I think you learn that you have to celebrate the small victories. You need to adapt your goals to what is realistic for the weekend or the season. Winning the championship this year is not a realistic goal. Of course, we are working towards it, but if we don’t achieve it, we shouldn’t blame ourselves because we are not in that position yet.”
The British driver added that every race must be approached with clear and concrete parameters: “If we think we can fight for the podium and end up fourth, I won’t be satisfied. But if I finish second, yes, that’s satisfying. Likewise, if we believe we can win and finish third, it might seem like a good result, but it still falls short of the potential.”
For George Russell, the key lies in interpreting results within the proper context: “You have to learn to take the small victories; otherwise, you risk falling into a negative spiral that can affect future performance. You don’t do it just to feel good, but to continue giving your best.”
This mindset has allowed Russell to develop resilience and focus, even in difficult seasons. By setting realistic goals, he has been able to maximize his performance in less competitive machinery, build confidence, and steadily progress toward higher achievements, both with Williams and now with Mercedes.
