George Russell cryptic about his future: “Something will happen in the next two weeks”. George Russell hints at major news within two weeks, as rumors grow about Max Verstappen joining Mercedes.

George Russell, 2024 F1

British Formula 1 driver George Russell has broken his silence, hinting that there could be important updates regarding his future in the coming fortnight. This statement comes at a time when speculation continues to grow about Max Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes in 2026. Meanwhile, the future of young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli remains uncertain, as Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff prepares to make a pivotal decision that could shape the future of the team.

Over the past few days, the paddock has been buzzing with increasingly persistent rumors surrounding the possibility of three-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull Racing and making a sensational move to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. According to insiders familiar with the situation, the team based in Brackley could be on the verge of resolving key issues in its driver line-up in the next two weeks.

Discussions about George Russell’s contract extension had already surfaced several months ago. The deal in question is reportedly worth 30 million US dollars per season over two years, with an additional option for 2028. However, despite these reports, there has been no official confirmation. Some expected the announcement to take place during the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone, but it ultimately never materialized.

At present, Mercedes’ driver pairing consists of George Russell and rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Both have performed consistently throughout the current Formula 1 season, delivering solid results, including podium finishes and crucial championship points. However, the possibility of Verstappen joining the team opens up several new scenarios, each with major implications for the Anglo-German outfit.

One of the most widely discussed options would be a driver duo made up of Max Verstappen and George Russell, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli being loaned out to another team to gain experience, potentially to Alpine. Another, more daring strategy could involve pairing Verstappen with Antonelli, creating a line-up that blends elite experience with youthful potential and long-term development.

George Russell: “It will happen at the right time, I want to stay at Mercedes”

George Russell, for his part, has expressed calm and confidence regarding his future. He made it clear that negotiations with Mercedes are ongoing but refused to reveal too much detail.

“My intention is to stay at Mercedes. That has always been the plan, and we’re in ongoing talks about the future,” Russell explained. “There’s not really a deadline as such. Ideally, we would like to settle things before the summer break, but this isn’t something entirely in my control. A lot of questions are being asked, but talking too much about it doesn’t change anything. It will happen at the right time. Probably something will happen in the next two weeks.”

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff also briefly commented on the situation, suggesting that the decision goes beyond just driver selection and involves broader organizational considerations.

“It’s not only a matter of choosing drivers. There’s an entire organization that we need to consider. This is a process that takes time, but we want to make sure we’re doing things properly,” Wolff said.

Mercedes’ objective remains crystal clear: the team is determined to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid and reclaim its position as a championship contender. With the summer break fast approaching, Toto Wolff faces a crucial strategic decision that will play a major role in shaping the next phase of Mercedes’ journey in the sport.
