Franco Colapinto’s troubles worsen as Alpine fails again on formation lap at Silverstone. Franco Colapinto suffers another major setback at Silverstone.

Franco Colapinto, 2024 F1

Yet another cruel twist of fate struck young Argentine Formula 1 driver Franco Colapinto, as his 2025 British Grand Prix weekend ended before it even began. His Alpine A525 Formula 1 car broke down during the formation lap at the Silverstone Circuit, preventing him from reaching the starting grid. The mechanical failure forced him to retire before the lights went out, dealing another devastating blow in what is becoming a nightmarish season.

The incident was both surreal and bitter. The 20-year-old South American driver was clearly frustrated and confused, expressing his disbelief over team radio: “Something broke, what the hell just happened? My God, it’s the same as Barcelona, it’s the same!” His words referred to a similar technical failure that had already occurred earlier in the season during the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Technical Disaster for Colapinto at Silverstone: Race Ends Before It Starts

Franco Colapinto’s race was already off to a difficult start. After only managing to qualify 20th on Saturday, his Alpine team opted to completely change the power unit, which meant he was required to start from the pit lane under the current Formula 1 sporting regulations. As procedure dictates, Colapinto left the garage to join the formation lap. He then returned to the pits, as the track remained damp, to switch to slick tyres—just like Charles Leclerc and George Russell did.

However, disaster struck during the restart process. The Alpine A525 shut down completely and failed to re-fire. The car was immobilized, and there was nothing Colapinto could do to continue.

Several hours later, Alpine officially confirmed that the issue had been caused by a transmission failure, although the team did not release further technical details. The failure was doubly painful. Not only did it rob Colapinto of a chance to race on a track that ultimately rewarded drivers starting from the back—such as Nico Hulkenberg, who finished third, and Lance Stroll, who climbed to seventh—but it also took away a key opportunity for Colapinto to showcase his potential in front of team management and the broader Formula 1 paddock.

Future in Jeopardy: Colapinto Faces Mounting Pressure

The 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was seen as a crucial moment for Franco Colapinto’s Formula 1 future. With experienced Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas increasingly linked to a potential return to the grid for the 2026 season, and growing speculation about a comeback from Australian driver Jack Doohan, pressure on the young Argentine is growing by the week.

This latest technical problem—regardless of who is to blame—may have eliminated one of the last remaining chances for Colapinto to prove himself to the Alpine team and secure a contract extension for the following season. In a sport where opportunities are scarce and competition is fierce, every race counts, and the spotlight in the paddock is now firmly fixed on the Argentine rookie.

Time is running out, and Franco Colapinto’s path toward securing a stable future in Formula 1 will now depend heavily on achieving a strong result in one of the upcoming races on the 2025 F1 calendar.
