
Former FIA Formula 3 driver Zdeněk Chovanec has died at the age of 21 in Trofa, Portugal. Born in Venezuela, the young driver competed in Italian Formula 4, Euroformula Open and FIA Formula 3 before making his final appearances in GT and LMP3 machinery.
The news has left the motorsport community in mourning. Zdeněk Chovanec reached FIA Formula 3 with Charouz after beginning his single-seater career in 2020 and previously competing in karting.
Motorsport mourns Zdeněk Chovanec
The racing world has been shaken by the sad news from Portugal. Former driver Zdeněk Chovanec died at the age of 21 in Trofa.
Zdeněk Chovanec was born in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. After competing in karting, he stepped up to single-seaters in 2020, taking part in the UAE Formula 4 Championship and the Italian Formula 4 Championship with Bhaitech. His best result in the Italian series was a fifth-place finish at Imola.
Zdeněk Chovanec’s appearances in Formula 3
In 2021, Zdeněk Chovanec joined Double R Racing in the Euroformula Open Championship. His strongest results once again came at Imola, where he recorded two seventh-place finishes.
Towards the end of the season, Zdeněk Chovanec moved into the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Charouz, replacing Reshad de Gerus. He contested the final part of the campaign but was unable to score a championship point.
Charouz placed Zdeněk Chovanec back in one of its Formula 3 cars the following year. He competed at Silverstone and the Red Bull Ring as a replacement for Lirim Zendeli before Christian Mansell subsequently took over the seat. Zdeněk Chovanec did not score points during either of his FIA Formula 3 campaigns.
Final appearances in GT and LMP3 racing
Zdeněk Chovanec made two brief appearances in sportscar racing during 2023. He was initially set to compete in the GT World Challenge, although he ultimately did not participate in the championship.
He later raced at Estoril in the LMP3 category of the Ultimate Cup Series. That event became one of his final appearances in competitive motorsport.
Funeral arrangements for Zdeněk Chovanec
A wake was held at the Infinito Chapel of the Matosinhos Funeral Home. The funeral was scheduled for Thursday, 23 July, at 11:00 at the Farewell Chapel of the Matosinhos Funeral Home.
The service was to be followed by cremation at Matosinhos Municipal Cemetery No. 2 in Sendim.
