The start of the season
After a disappointing 2025, the first three races of the 2026 season have brought encouraging results for Alpine, currently sitting fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. From the Australian Grand Prix to the Japanese Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly consistently scored points, while Franco Colapinto also broke into the top 10 in China. It is a positive start for the French team, which, for the first time in its history, competed without Renault engines, instead running Mercedes power units.
Future plans
Renault and the entire team appear determined to continue their Formula 1 project, which began with their return to the sport in 2016 and was renamed Alpine in 2021. This commitment remains even amid the potential sale of 24% of Alpine’s shares held by the U.S. investment fund Otro Capital.
Briatore on building a winning team
Alpine Executive Consultant Flavio Briatore, 75, did not provide exact details on how the team plans to return to victory, but his statements indirectly confirm Alpine and Renault’s long-term commitment to Formula 1. “It’s a very difficult question, I don’t know,” Flavio Briatore told the media. “We try to do our best and improve year after year. But now we have everything to be competitive. We’re very happy with the engine we have, and quite happy with the whole team. Certainly, we’ve made many changes to the team and we need to prepare the foundations, the cornerstone, to build the squad. It takes a few years, like for everyone. We want to win, and we’ll see. We are working hard and will see what happens. But we are fully committed, Renault is committed, and the team is committed. So we’ll see. We do our best, like everyone else.”
Flavio Briatore’s outlook reflects a team in a state of productive transition. By stabilizing the management structure and leveraging the performance of the Mercedes power unit, Alpine is looking to move past the volatility of recent years. The focus now shifts toward ensuring that the “cornerstone” the Italian manager mentioned is strong enough to support a genuine championship challenge in the future, signaling to fans and investors alike that the French brand is in Formula 1 for the long haul.
