Official: FIA Decision on the Russell-Alonso Incident

During Free Practice 3 at the Dutch Grand Prix, George Russell and Fernando Alonso came dangerously close to what could have been a serious collision.

The incident

At the end of a timed lap, as Alonso approached the main straight, he had to swerve to avoid the Mercedes number 63, which was re-entering the pit lane. The two-time world champion driving for Aston Martin managed to avoid contact with Russell but risked damaging his car against the barrier.

The FIA verdict

After reviewing the incident, the race stewards decided to fine Mercedes €7,500 and issued a warning to Russell. According to the official statement, “The team did not warn the driver adequately. However, Russell could have exercised more caution by positioning himself earlier and more to the right.”
