F1 | Antonelli targeted by social media hate: FIA takes a stand
The FIA has defended Kimi Antonelli following waves of social media abuse, with the federation stepping in to support the young Italian driver. The Mercedes junior was overwhelmed by criticism and personal attacks online after a mistake during the Qatar Grand Prix, an error that allowed Lando Norris to gain two points in the championship battle.
The post published on the FIA’s official channels was clear. The international governing body reaffirmed its position against all forms of abuse, both online and offline, urging the public to show respect. The statement, shared alongside the United Against Online Abuse campaign logo, focused on a key issue.
FIA statement defending Antonelli
“The FIA and its United Against Online Abuse campaign condemn all forms of abuse and harassment. It is essential that those working in our sport can do so in a safe and respectful environment.” The text continued with a direct message to the motorsport community: “We support Kimi Antonelli and call on the community, both online and offline, to treat drivers, teams, officials, and the entire sporting ecosystem with the respect and compassion they deserve.”
After the Qatar GP, Kimi Antonelli faced a barrage of aggressive comments. Some fans blamed the young Italian driver for the advantage Norris gained in the standings, turning a normal racing incident into a personal attack.
The FIA chose to act quickly, defending one of the youngest drivers in the paddock and reminding the public of something often forgotten on social media: athletes are human. Mistakes are part of racing. Abuse is never justified.
The statement comes at a delicate time, with the championship battle still open and increasing pressure on the drivers involved. Kimi Antonelli is one of the youngest and least experienced contenders for the title, yet he has been exposed to an unacceptable level of hostility.
Through its online hate campaign, the FIA continues to emphasize a clear message to fans, media, and enthusiasts: sporting rivalry should never turn into verbal violence. The FIA’s statement is a call to bring discussions back within the bounds of civility, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all participants in the championship.
This latest action reinforces the FIA’s ongoing commitment to its United Against Online Abuse initiative. It serves as a firm call to fans, media and the wider community: passionate debate is part of Formula 1, but it must never cross the line into verbal violence. The message is clear – keep the conversation civil and protect the people who make the sport what it is.
