The best overtake of the Formula 1 season, according to the FIA Action of the Year Award, goes to Sergio Perez for his move on Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso in China. However, the decision has sparked debate, with some pointing out that Perez’s “double overtake” was facilitated by the intense battle between the two drivers ahead of him. Other contenders included Alexander Albon’s double overtake in Canada and Oscar Piastri’s move on Lando Norris in Monza.
As per tradition, the global motorsport community gathers for the end-of-season Gala, where awards and trophies celebrate the highlights of the recently concluded championships. Among the Formula 1 accolades is the FIA Action of the Year, recognizing the season’s best overtake.
In 2023, the award went to Fernando Alonso for his overtake on Sergio Perez during the final stages of the Brazilian GP. This year, the roles reversed: Sergio Perez won the award for his move in China, where he capitalized on the fierce battle between Alonso and Sainz to pass both in one swift maneuver. Perez received 60% of the votes, compared to 30% for Alexander Albon and 10% for Oscar Piastri.
Sergio Perez satisfied: “I want to share this award with Fernando and Carlos”
After a challenging year, the Mexican driver found a moment to smile: “I’d like to thank all the fans who voted for me for this award, and I also want to share it with Fernando and Carlos. As always, an overtake requires two drivers, and it was a key moment in the race, as well as an important move to secure third place. Enjoy the evening, and don’t forget to drink tequila!”
However, the decision has sparked controversy on social media. Some fans believe Alexander Albon’s maneuver in Canada deserved the award, while others side with Oscar Piastri. Regardless of personal opinions, this award undeniably celebrates an outstanding Formula 1 season filled with thrilling overtakes, excitement, and emotions throughout every round of the championship.
