No points in Austin
The Texas weekend ended with several difficulties for Aston Martin, finishing outside the top 10 with both of its drivers on the Austin circuit. The points zone was not reached, primarily by Fernando Alonso, who was initially highly critical of returning driver Liam Lawson during the Sprint race and later found himself outside the top 10 despite starting the United States Grand Prix from seventh on the grid.
Fernando Alonso’s comments
The United States GP did not go favorably for the two-time Formula 1 world champion, who finished 13th after a double header of street circuit races in Baku and Marina Bay, where the Spaniard had brought his AMR24 into the top ten: “Today was a tough race for us, and we dropped a few positions from our starting spot,” the 43-year-old commented. “I believe we outperformed the car’s natural position in qualifying, and we knew it would be an uphill battle to stay in the top ten. It was a difficult weekend, and we have a lot to analyze in the coming days to improve ahead of Mexico.” – he pointed out.
A challenge for Lance Stroll as well
Few but significant words that reflect the disappointment of a frustrating weekend for both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who hasn’t finished in the top ten since the Hungarian GP: “We lacked pace compared to the other cars today,” he added. “I had a bit of a tricky restart with a slide in turn 10, but I think even without that, the result would have been the same. The car didn’t have the performance needed to fight for positions. We still have work to do to improve this car, and we’ll commit ourselves fully to achieving that.”
A new negative ‘record’
To make the Canadian’s day worse, he also set a new negative record: the highest number of Grand Prix races without ever setting a fastest lap, with 162. Before him, the record stood at 161, held by Johnny Herbert, who finished his career without any fastest laps but with three wins and seven podiums.
