The two-time world champion is aiming to still be on the grid in 2027.
A major disappointment
When Adrian Newey accepted Aston Martin’s offer, Fernando Alonso had hoped that the arrival of the legendary British designer would provide the decisive boost needed for the team to fight for victories.
However, the 2026 regulatory revolution, which was expected to offer a chance to climb back up the grid, has so far turned into a major setback for Aston Martin. The team has instead lost further ground and is currently the tenth-fastest car on the grid.
Will Alonso continue?
In just over three months, Fernando Alonso will turn 45, and many are wondering whether this difficult 2026 season could be the final year in Formula 1 for the two-time world champion.
Alonso himself addressed the situation during a visit to the Automobile Club de Monaco at the historic Grand Prix, saying:
“How much longer will I be in F1? I don’t know, it’s hard to say. I love what I do, I love competing. I did my first race at 3 years old and now I’m 44, so I have spent 41 years of my life behind the wheel. When the time comes to stop racing, it will be a difficult decision to accept.”
Alonso was then even more specific about his intentions for 2027:
“For now, I feel that moment has not arrived yet. I feel competitive, I feel motivated and happy when I drive. So I hope this is not my last season,” said the 2005 and 2006 world champion.
Fernando Alonso’s commitment to Formula 1 remains unshaken despite Aston Martin’s disappointing performance in the new technical era. While the SF-26 regulations have shuffled the competitive order to the detriment of the Silverstone-based squad, Fernando Alonso’s personal drive continues to outpace his age. His desire to remain on the grid into 2027 suggests that he is willing to lead the team through its recovery phase, banking on the long-term influence of Adrian Newey to eventually turn their fortunes around.
