Fernando Alonso is a fan of Max Verstappen. He often reiterates this, but his candid comment after qualifying for the Japanese GP last week surprised everyone: “Only he could do it,” he said on Saturday afternoon.
Max Verstappen’s qualities are undeniable, and everyone expects a lot from him. When performances like the ones at Suzuka happen, in a way, they seem almost normal when done by the number 1 driver of Red Bull.
Fernando Alonso impressed by Max Verstappen: “I like it when those who don’t drive the best car win.” Reached in the paddock by media present in Sakhir, including GPBlog.com, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso wanted to express, with a clear mind, the reasons that lead him to say that Max is “The best. I really think so, and I’ve been saying it for many years now. He drives at a level we others haven’t reached yet. I like it when drivers who aren’t in the best car win, and I think others agree with me.”
The last sentence certainly finds agreement with everyone, but if there were still anyone unconvinced by these words, the Asturian decided to provide further explanation to support his thoughts: “Formula 1 has had periods of dominance in recent years. We’ve seen great teams and great drivers. Many of these victories, however, have been easy.”
“If we take out 2023, in both 2022 and 2024, Max had fierce competition. Not to mention 2021, when he fought against Lewis. Compared to the recent eras,” and here Fernando Alonso refers to the dominance of Vettel’s Red Bull and Mercedes, “the championships won by Max have been more contested,” concluded the Aston Martin driver ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.
