Fernando Alonso on Adrian Newey’s impact at Aston Martin: “It goes beyond aerodynamics”. Fernando Alonso praises Adrian Newey’s wide-ranging impact at Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso, Adrian Newey 2024

According to two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso, the arrival of British engineer Adrian Newey at Aston Martin will bring benefits that extend far beyond the aerodynamic department. The Spanish driver believes Newey’s expertise will elevate the entire structure of the team based in Silverstone.

One of the most significant signings ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season was undoubtedly secured by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, owner of the Aston Martin F1 Team. Through a record-breaking contract, he managed to lure Adrian Newey—previously Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull Racing—into the Aston Martin fold. Considered by many to be the greatest aerodynamicist in the history of the sport, Newey began working with Aston Martin in March 2025 and is now fully focused on designing the car for the 2026 season, which will usher in a new era of technical regulations.

The goal of the Silverstone-based outfit is clear: to become a front-running team in the shortest time possible. This ambition is supported not only by heavy financial investments from Lawrence Stroll Sr., but also by the advanced infrastructure of the Aston Martin factory and the presence of elite professionals such as Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso himself. Alonso, a double world champion with Renault, is still chasing his first Grand Prix victory in Aston Martin colours.

In a recent interview quoted by Speedweek.com, Fernando Alonso shared his thoughts on working alongside Adrian Newey, underlining how the British engineer’s contribution goes well beyond his renowned aerodynamic talent. The Spanish driver revealed that Newey’s holistic approach is already helping to reshape the entire team’s mentality and working methods.

“We’ve had a few lunches together,” Alonso said. “In general, Adrian focuses on everything that concerns the team, not just the technical or aerodynamic aspects. He’s also working with us on improving the simulator to make it more realistic. But more than that, he brings extensive experience from his time at multiple top-tier teams. He knows what it takes to fight for world championships. He knows that to succeed, you must operate at the highest level in every single department.”

Alonso emphasised that Adrian Newey has adopted a broad and strategic vision of the project, and that his presence is already proving educational for everyone involved. “He’s taken on a very wide-angle perspective,” Fernando Alonso explained. “He thinks about how a team should function as a whole. That’s why every time we talk to him, we learn something new.”

With Adrian Newey contributing not only to the development of the 2026 car but also to the internal culture of the team, and with Alonso’s continued dedication and drive for victory, Aston Martin is clearly aiming to position itself as a serious contender in the next phase of Formula 1.
