Zero points after the first three races: a clearly negative performance for Fernando Alonso, who already had to start three world championship seasons uphill during his career, from 2015 to 2017, then in his second stint at McLaren. Now, the Spaniard at Aston Martin has had to deal with two retirements and an 11th-place finish in the last Japanese Grand Prix, with the upcoming Bahrain GP possibly offering a chance to reach the points zone.
In an interview with AS, the two-time world champion nonetheless spoke with a certain resignation about how he had repeatedly been close to the top ten, not without making a joke about the disqualification of three cars in China that allowed other drivers to enter the points: “In all three races I think I could have been close to the points or in the points,” he explained. “In Australia I was tenth when I ended up in the gravel. In China I was eleventh when the brakes caught fire, and in Japan I finished eleventh. Those have been my positions this season. Even if two or three cars get disqualified…” – the Spanish driver pointed out.
Now in his third season with Aston Martin, this has definitely been his worst start so far with the team based in Silverstone. In 2023, in fact, he even took three consecutive podiums (all in third place), scoring a total of 45 points, compared to 16 last year. A 2025 Formula 1 season still without points, with Fernando Alonso considering a top-10 finish impossible given the car’s performance: “We’ll see if we continue to improve, but as I always say, scoring points is an impossible task with the performance we have, and we shouldn’t be asking for points because we have what we have.” – the former Ferrari and McLaren driver concluded ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend.
