Fernando Alonso has acknowledged that there are no guarantees Honda’s 2027 Formula 1 power unit will be fully competitive, but the two-time world champion remains confident in the direction of the Aston Martin project. After extending his contract for another season, Fernando Alonso believes the combination of Honda and Adrian Newey gives the team the ingredients required to succeed in the future.
Fernando Alonso will remain on the Formula 1 grid in 2027 after renewing his Aston Martin contract. The Spaniard will celebrate his 46th birthday on 29 July next year, on the eve of practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The two-time world champion naturally hopes to be far more competitive by the time his next birthday arrives than he is at present. Fernando Alonso has no doubts about his own ability and is waiting for a car that can allow him to demonstrate that he is still capable of competing at the highest level despite his advancing years.
“This team has all the ingredients to be successful in the future,” Fernando Alonso said, as reported by the BBC. “It didn’t feel like the right time for me to leave. I want to give Honda a second chance and Adrian Newey is a guarantee.”
Honda’s progress remains one of the most important factors in Aston Martin’s prospects. The Japanese manufacturer has continued working on its Formula 1 project, with further power-unit development taking place at Sakura as it looks to improve its competitiveness.

Fernando Alonso is nevertheless realistic about the uncertainty surrounding Honda’s 2027 power unit. He does not have any guarantee that the engine will reach the required level next season, but believes the changes being made in Japan are moving the programme in the correct direction.
“They are moving in the right direction,” Fernando Alonso added. “There are no guarantees that next year the engine will be completely right, but all the changes underway at Honda make sense, so I have confidence.”
That confidence is central to Fernando Alonso’s decision to continue with Aston Martin for another year. While the competitiveness of the 2027 package cannot yet be guaranteed, the Spaniard believes the technical structure being built around Honda and Adrian Newey gives the project enough potential to justify remaining in Formula 1.
Fernando Alonso will therefore head into another season as the oldest driver on the grid, still convinced that he has the speed required to compete if Aston Martin can provide him with the machinery to do so. His position and those of his rivals can be followed through the Formula 1 driver standings as the current campaign continues.
