The upcoming 2026 Formula 1 season brings a wave of uncertainty with the new regulations, but for Williams drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz Jr., the team could have a potential advantage that sets them apart from rivals.
Thanks to consistent results and the hard work of the entire team, Albon and Sainz Jr. helped Williams make a significant leap forward in the Constructors’ Championship compared to previous seasons. Their strong performance in 2025 saw the Grove-based team finish fifth in the standings, just behind Ferrari. However, with the introduction of new technical regulations in 2026, all teams must effectively start from scratch. Many questions remain unanswered, and it will only be at the Barcelona pre-season tests in January that teams can clarify the first uncertainties and gather concrete data.
Both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz Jr. have shared their initial impressions regarding the new cars and how their driving styles might need to adapt.
A mix of emotions
In a video released on Williams’ official YouTube channel, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Alex Albon spoke candidly about their feelings heading into 2026, identifying one key concept: “Efficiency.”
Sainz Jr. admitted to feeling a touch of tension, but in a positive sense: “It’s a kind of positive tension. An exciting anxiety, a positive worry, let’s say. Of course, I have no doubt I will adapt and find a way, but I’m already thinking about which parts of my driving style will fit the car next year and which areas I’ll need to work on.”
He highlighted uncertainties, particularly regarding the driving approach required for the new cars: “Next year, everything will be focused on efficiency. We know that when it comes to pushing the car to 100%, we are all very capable. But we don’t yet know if our natural driving style at the limit will also be the most efficient.”
The potential Williams advantage
Sainz Jr. added: “Discipline will be key, understanding what makes the car efficient. And honestly, I believe we will work well together as a team.” – the former Ferrari driver pointed out.
For Alex Albon, this focus on efficiency and collaboration could become a decisive factor for Williams in 2026: “I hope this will be our advantage next year: experience and how we collaborate. At the start of the season, when the cars are not yet fully understood, this will be critical. Even in the worst-case scenario, where I wouldn’t want to be, if the car isn’t exactly where we want it to be, we could still develop it better than other teams, both in tools and efficiency, and make it grow.”
Williams appears to be banking on the combined expertise of Albon and Sainz Jr., their ability to adapt to the new technical regulations, and the disciplined approach to maximizing car efficiency as key factors that could give them an edge in the 2026 season.
