Norris spoke to the official microphones after qualifying and said that despite finishing second, he was happy with the result he achieved.
Qualifying at the Spanish GP ended with an excellent 1-2 for McLaren: Norris finished second, while teammate Oscar Piastri took pole position. In the first Q1 attempt, Norris posted a strong time, starting a head-to-head with Oscar Piastri that lasted through all the qualifying sessions. He ended the first qualifying session in third place. In Q2 Norris improved but still couldn’t get close to the time of the other papaya.
Barcelona had worried the team and fans about a possible reshuffle of the pecking order on track, but that did not happen. McLaren confirmed itself as the top force, with a stable car capable of generating a lot of grip and responding precisely to driver inputs. The results are clear, and McLaren has a huge advantage over other teams. Lando Norris also reiterated in his interview that despite his lap not being one of his best and having some mistakes, he still managed to post a great time.
“My first lap went well, it was good. The second was just a bit dirtier, but surprisingly I still improved, so I think that shows that despite some errors I made, I didn’t expect to improve at all, but I did. That shows the pace was easily there, I just needed to fix some points. It happens, so I’m still happy with second place. A one-two for the team is a good result.”
The incident between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri and Sunday’s start
During qualifying in Spain, there was a minor misunderstanding between the two McLaren drivers about a slipstream Norris tried to take from Oscar Piastri: the Australian immediately moved aside. This could lead to speculation about how the two will manage the start tomorrow. Norris didn’t comment on the incident after qualifying but stressed that this result is an excellent achievement not only for him but for the whole team. Does he want to avoid being too aggressive at the start?
