F1: Mercedes appears strong in Singapore GP free practice
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff spoke to Sky Sports F1 about the free practice sessions at the Singapore Grand Prix, emphasizing how open the battle already is in what promises to be a highly competitive weekend. Wolff explained that everything is very close, which is typical for a street circuit where drivers must take risks and navigate near the walls. He highlighted that qualifying will likely be decided by the smallest of details, noting how every tenth of a second can make a huge difference: “If the situation stays like this, in qualifying a single tenth can move you several positions.”
Environmental factors could influence the battle
The Austrian also pointed out that environmental conditions will play a key role. Variations in temperature could significantly affect tire performance and car balance, factors that could impact the entire fight at the front, particularly on a track like Marina Bay, where grip management is critical. Wolff avoided making predictions but aimed to send a message of confidence, reaffirming that Mercedes remains competitive and capable of staying in contention: “I don’t think these times already reflect the qualifying results, but from our side, I can say we are in the mix.”
Mercedes aims to stay close to the leaders
This message confirms that Mercedes, after a challenging start to the season, has managed to find a solid platform to compete with Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull. The impression is that Singapore qualifying will be one of the tightest of the year, with multiple teams separated by just a few tenths of a second. For Wolff and his drivers, the goal is to stay glued to the front group and capitalize on every opportunity in a weekend where grid position could mean the difference between a podium finish and a disappointing result. Antonelli and Russell have been clearly warned.
